BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – Twelfth Air Force (Air Force Forces Southern) completed a medical assistance mission in St. Kitts and Nevis region, March 18–27.

Forty-three U.S. Air Force active duty and reserve Airmen traveled to St. Kitts and Nevis in support of this year’s Lesser Antilles Medical Assistance Team mission. The mission fostered collaboration and training opportunities between Airmen and local medical professionals to achieve positive outcomes through shared goals in benefiting patient care.

“I want to say thank you to all of you from the U.S. Air Force, to our own medical staff and all those who were directly involved for your excellent demonstration of humanity in caring for our people here in St. Kitts and Nevis, especially for those who needed it the most,” said the Honorable Dr. Terrance Drew, Prime Minister and Minister of Health.

U.S. Air Force Col. Zoe Hawes, troop commander, said the team cared for more than 1,000 patients in just two weeks.

“We’ve made many new friends and forged important professional relationships. We hope to continue this valued and fruitful partnership in the future,” Hawes said.

The closing ceremony was attended by Roger Nyhus, U.S. Ambassador to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, where he expressed his favoritism towards the LAMAT program.

“My three priorities as Ambassador are addressing climate change, enhancing regional security and ensuring economic prosperity for all, and you can’t do any of that without health,” said Nyhus. “On behalf of President Biden and Vice President Harris, I just want to extend our true commitment to this region.”

The LAMAT 2024 mission deployed 143 USAF personnel across multiple locations within Latin America and the Caribbean to include Suriname, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Kitts and Nevis, impacting more than 3,500 patients.
