[MARINE CORPS AIR STATION YUMA, ARIZONA] – In honor of April being the Month of the Military Child, Marine Corps Community Services (MCCS) hosted the Super Kids Carnival at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Arizona, April 19, 2024.

The carnival included rides, games, music, inflatable bouncy houses as well as superhero masks and capes. The carnival was a way to show appreciation to children of military families. According to the Department of Defense (DOD), “There are more than 1.6 million military children who face many challenges and unique experiences as a result of their parents' service.”

To really understand the hardship of being a military child the DOD states, “while military members serve around the world, we often forget the challenges faced by their children. Military families move on average every two to three years, impacting military children through changing schools and support networks. Each year, the DOD joins national, state and local government, schools, military serving organizations, companies and private citizens in celebrating military children and the sacrifices they make.”

Alisha Madison with the MCCS special events team, says “in honor of April being Month of the Military Child it’s the least we can do to give back to the military kids aboard MCAS Yuma.”

It’s important to note that within the last year MCCS from MCAS Yuma merged with MCCS from Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California, allowing them to share resources and raise the budget for larger scaled events such as this one. All this could not have been done without the help of the Marines and Sailors that volunteered for this event.

“This event would not be possible without our Marine (and Sailor) volunteers. Spending the day with us, helping us set up for the event and breaking it down, I mean they’re amazing,” said Madison.

HM3 Paige Brown, a corpsman with Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Unit Yuma, volunteered at the one of the many carnival games during the event and had this to say about her experience, “it made me feel good giving back to the community of MCAS Yuma. It’s nice to see the kids having fun.”

This annual event is a continuation of MCAS Yuma’s and MCCS’ ongoing efforts to honor the month of the military child and provide support to military members and their families.
