Staff Sgt. Daniel Haas, a recruiting and retention noncommissioned officer for the Missouri Army National Guard, was the recipient of the Army National Guard’s Director’s 54 Award, Aug. 10, 2023, in Branson, during the Recruiting and Retention Battalions annual training.

The Director's 54, bestowed annually, honors the top Army National Guard recruiter from each of the fifty states, the District of Columbia, and the three U.S. territories (Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands). The award acknowledges the exceptional achievements of noncommissioned officers who attain superior recruiting levels, actively promote diversity, and receive top ratings for their Soldiers attending the Recruit Sustainment Program.

“Staff Sgt. Haas required very little support or guidance to succeed,” said Master Sgt. Ryan N. Reid, Missouri Army National Guard Recruiter and Regional Section Chief. “He is internally motivated and his success is solely contributed to his mindset and work ethic.”

Haas started with only nine months left in the 2023 fiscal year but successfully recruited 21 Soldiers, surpassing his mission goal of 16 Soldiers.

“My original goal for 2023 was to complete my mission and see how far I could go from there,” said Haas. “In my area of operation, I focused on being as present as I could at all my schools, taking care of the staff and administrators every visit, and always asking for a referral when I conducted appointments with possible enlistments. I believe being goal-oriented and motivated by my team and noncommissioned officer in charge contributed a lot to my success.”

Haas, originally from Marceline, enlisted in the Guard in 2014 as a bridge crew member with the 1438th Engineer Company. He sought to be part of something bigger, benefit from tuition assistance, and build a foundation for his future family, who now helps drive him.

“What motivated me is knowing I have a family at home to take care of and being goal-oriented; the I can get one more mentality,” he said.

Haas’ purposeful nature is one that his supervisors believe lead to his success and even sets him apart from his peers.

“Haas is goal oriented, not easily shaken by obstacles,” said Reid. “He maintains a level head under pressure which allows him to maintain focus on the objective until the mission is complete, whereas others in this position can allow the setbacks to negatively impact performance.”

Being recognized by his leadership and the National Guard Bureau is an honor, and winning the award once is enough for him, said Haas. His main focus is on making the area and the Recruiting and Retention Battalion (RRBN) successful, all while finding fulfillment in watching his recruits succeed.

“For myself, seeing the soldiers I’ve worked with and enlisted grow as individuals in their respective paths and then go back to their schools to share their success stories is an overall rewarding experience,” he said.

His leadership looks forward to his future within the RRBN.

“Staff Sgt. Haas, you stepped into the game late and reminded everyone in this battalion that with attitude and effort the mission is not just attainable, but is just a drop in the bucket compared to what you can achieve,” said Reid. “You have a bright future in this battalion, and it was an honor to work with you the past year. Keep it up, you are a peer leader for the recruiters who are struggling out there. It's time for you to be a louder voice and encourage your teammates to succeed as well. Iron sharpens Iron.”
