[MARINE CORPS AIR STATION YUMA, ARIZONA] – In an effort to raise awareness about the correlation between animal cruelty and domestic violence, the Family Advocacy Program hosted Paws for a Cause, an event for Marines, Sailors and their families to come together and enjoy the evening at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Arizona, March 22, 2024.

Domestic violence and child abuse are globally recognized issues that the U.S. is constantly combating. However, what many don’t know is that there is a direct correlation between animal abuse, domestic violence and child abuse.

“In one study of families under investigation for suspected child abuse, researchers found that pet abuse had occurred in 88 percent of the families under supervision for physical abuse of their children” “Animal Cruelty Facts and Stats.” The Humane Society of the United States.

“In one survey, 71 percent of domestic violence victims reported that their abuser also targeted pets.” “Animal Cruelty Facts and Stats.” The Humane Society of the United States.

These are the statistics that the Family Advocacy Program wanted to bring attention to during Paws for a Cause.

“Today the Family Advocacy Program is hosting the Paws for a Cause event. We are hosting this event to bring awareness to animal abuse and the connection it has with child abuse and domestic violence” said Ingrid Sanchez, a Social Services Assistant with the Family Advocacy Program.

At the event service members and their families could participate in mini-games, as well as inquire about programs and services offered by the Family Advocacy Program to help combat animal abuse, child abuse and domestic violence.

The Family Advocacy Program offers counseling, victim advocate services, and prevention services for military members and their families. Additionally, there are community counseling services which deal with grief, adjustment issues and relationship issues. There is also a family team building program that provides family readiness and preventative workshops.

Paws for a Cause concluded with a competition that showcased the many talents of the different pets in attendance that evening. Once the talent show had finished, service members and their families left with smiles on their faces and a little more knowledge about how everyone can better combat critical issues facing humans and animals alike.
