NAVAL AIR STATION SIGONELLA, Italy (Feb. 28, 2024) – In recognition of women who have made great achievements and to jump start Women’s History Month, Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella is highlighting Machinist’s Mate 3rd Class Justina Brocker, 29, from Monrovia, Liberia, as its newest Sailor in the Spotlight.
“Being able to serve as a woman, and an African American woman at that, I have already accomplished two things women with my appearance were not allowed to do not so long ago,” said Brocker. “I take pride in having a career for which so many who came before me fought.”
Brocker is a Machinist’s Mate (MM) by trade, but her primary duties and tasks at NAS Sigonella are very different from what MMs typically do on a ship. Here, she works as a Command Pay and Personnel Administrator (CPPA) for the installation’s Administrative Office. She assists Sailors with the check-in and check-out process, and fixes personnel pay discrepancies.
“MM3 Justina Brocker has been an incredibly vital member of our department,” said her supervisor, Yeoman 1st Class Devon Inshaw, from San Jose, California. “She is the primary point of contact for all Sailors transferring to and from NAS Sigonella and works wonderfully with our team to ensure all CPPA tasking is completed in a timely manner.”
Most recently, Brocker created a CPPA Guide which includes vital information to help all NAS Sigonella Sailors, especially those checking into the command, understand CPPA related items unique to Sigonella. The information was recently implemented into the base’s indoctrination class.
She also enjoys helping people stay connected. In addition to her primary duty as a CPPA, Brocker is a Telecommunications Control Officer and an Information Assurance Officer, and can assist personnel with phone issues and internet access.
“Not everyone will see or understand everything you do, or why you do it,” said Brocker. “But as long as you know what you’re doing, know why you are doing it, and willing to learn and improve– your job and purpose in the military holds weight. No matter how small or big.”
Brocker joined to the Navy in 2017 to travel the world and meet new people. After serving only six years, she is very proud to say she has traveled to 17 countries.
She has also been able to pursue an education with University of Maryland Global Campus and is slated to graduate with a Psychology degree in April 2024.
“I chose to pursue a Psychology degree in order understand why I am the way I am, and to understand why other people do the things they do,” said Brocker.
Her favorite part about being in Europe is traveling and trying new foods. In her free time, Brocker enjoys cooking, listening to music, reading and writing, and binge-watching TV shows.
At work, she enjoys meeting and helping all the Sailors who transfer to and from NAS Sigonella. Brocker is a key team member of the administrative staff and her work plays a large role in maintaining the NAS Sigonella administrative mission and in keeping CPPA functions running smoothly.
