TRANSIT CENTER AT MANAS, Kyrgyzstan -- In honor of Women's Day, March 8, the First 4 club at the Transit Center at Manas, Kyrgyzstan, raised money and purchased 500 tulips to give to the Kyrgyz women who are employed here.
Additionally, because this is the centennial anniversary of Women's Day, the 100th female host nation employee to arrive on the Transit Center, March 7, was presented with a random bonus: a mink coat.
"I didn't even know you all knew about Women's Day," said Mairamgyl Satieva, the recipient of the coat.
Lt. Col. Rex Vanderwood, 376th Expeditionary Mission Support Group deputy commander deployed from Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii, gave her the coat with the help of Senior Airman Maria Gates, president of the First 4, who translated so that Mairamgyl would understand what was happening.
"The Airman of Transit Center of Manas would like to take this opportunity to congratulate you with the International Women's Day holiday, March 8. We would like to wish you lots of love, health and prosperity in your life," read the card that accompanied each flower, signed personally by Col. Blaine Holt, the wing commander.
In addition to the flower and coat give-away, Airmen from the Transit Center acknowledged women from Kyrgyzstan with participation in the Philharmonic, Feb. 25, a women's basketball game, March 5, and a tour for the Kyrgyz Law Academy women, March 6. This week, the Airmen here will celebrate the beginning of a renovation for a Women's Crisis Center downtown.
The Transit Center at Manas also partners with the Congress of Women of the Kyrgyz Republic. Women's Day is a tribute to the beauty, character, strength and resourcefulness of women.
