KABUL, Afghanistan - An insurgent commander was killed March 5 while attempting to emplace an improvised explosive device according to reports from Afghan and ISAF forces operating in the Lashkar Gah District of Helmand province.

"IEDs target innocent civilians throughout our country," said Maj. Gen. Azimi, Ministry of Defense spokesman. "This incident demonstrates the instability of the weapon and the steps the insurgency will take to harm our people. MOD will do everything possible to keep Afghans safe."

In a separate operation, Afghan national police forces operating with ISAF in Panjwa District, Kandahar province, discovered a weapons cache including one RPG, three grenades, one jug filled with various types of small-arms ammunition, multiple AK-47 magazines and IED blasting caps.
