NAVAL AIR STATION SIGONELLA, Italy (Nov. 28, 2023) – Electronics Technician 3rd Class Leah Anderson, 20, from Combine, Texas, made it a personal goal to join the military when she was in middle school and can now refer to Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella as her first Navy command.
“As a service member, I have been blessed with the opportunity to protect those who otherwise cannot protect themselves,” said Anderson.
Anderson enlisted in the Navy Aug. 9, 2021 and has been assigned to the NAS Sigonella Operations Department, Ground Electronics Maintenance Division (GEMD) for nearly one year.
Though she primarily maintains equipment, she also serves as the hazmat petty-officer-in-charge, fire warden, training petty officer, tech manual librarian, enterprise land mobile radio custodian and serves in the honor guard.
“Though collateral duties allow me the opportunity to increase my knowledge outside of my rate, my favorite part of this job is constantly learning new things and the comradery within my division,” said Anderson.
Anderson said her proudest accomplishment so far while serving in the Navy has been the strides she has taken to improve her time-management skills and work-life balance – allowing her to meet deadlines early and take on more responsibility.
Anderson recently finished her basic qualifications as an Electronics Technician and now plans to pursue a degree.
Despite the heavy workload, Anderson still finds time to enjoy her hobbies, like going to the beach, painting and traveling.
“My favorite thing about Europe is the ease of travel, stepping outside of my comfort zone and learning about new cultures,” said Anderson. “There’s a constant sense of adventure – living in a foreign country.”
Pushing herself beyond her comfort zone is advice Anderson follows from John Wayne, who said, “Courage is being scared to death, but saddling up anyway.”
NAS Sigonella’s strategic location enables U.S., allied, and partner nation forces to deploy and respond as required, ensuring security and stability in Europe, Africa and Central Command.
