NORMAN, Okla. - Members of the Oklahoma National Guard’s 145th Army Band joined the University of Oklahoma to honor veterans, as well as connect with the community at Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium November 11, 2023.
“It’s very much a community trust building exercise,” said Sgt. Austin Vasicek, a member of the 145th Amy Band, 90th Troop Command. “The people who we just played for, the thousands of folks, they’ve come from all over the state, and some people from all over different areas of the country.”
Vasicek said it meant a lot to be able to help foster support between the community and the Oklahoma National Guard.
Chief Warrant Officer 2 Brandon McMillian, bandmaster of the 145th Army Band, expressed his gratitude for the chance to collaborate with the Pride of Oklahoma.
“To me there’s something special about music that kind of brings everybody together,” McMillian said. “It’s the icing on the cake, it’s the language that everybody speaks.”
Veterans from all branches were honored and celebrated in a ceremony by the University of Oklahoma, underscoring Oklahoma’s commitment to recognizing the sacrifices of those who have served.
