The 48th Fighter Wing unveiled a new maintenance facility Oct. 5, 2023, which is set to increase the pace of maintenance operations and have ripple effects not just on the wing but on NATO allies as well.

The new facility, which has been two years in the making, will primarily be used by the 48th Component Maintenance Squadron for fuels related maintenance on both fourth and fifth generation aircraft.

“Our new hangar space will be utilized to expand our capabilities working with conformal and external fuel tanks used on the F-15Es, ultimately affecting every Fighter Generation Squadron in the 48th Fighter Wing,” said Master Sgt. Jeffrey S. Cunningham, 48th CMS fuel systems noncommissioned officer in charge.

In addition to expanded capabilities to support the Liberty Wing’s Strike Eagles, the hangar comes with modern equipment aimed to enable quicker F-35 weapons systems turnover and increased mission-ready status.

“This building is really an extension of the F-35 weapons system in our area of responsibility,” said Cunningham. “By effectively doubling our available hangar space, we can accomplish any required maintenance more quickly.”

The improved infrastructure will be able to house 53 personnel and translates to an enhanced ability to sustain air assets, ultimately increasing overall readiness in the region.

The unveiling of the new hangar at RAF Lakenheath marks a key moment for the 48th Fighter Wing and its role in ensuring the readiness and capabilities of the Liberty Wing fleet. With enhanced maintenance capabilities and infrastructure, the 48th FW is well-prepared to respond to the dynamic challenges in the AOR while also bolstering its ability to provide combat ready forces in support of NATO.
