On October 19, 1979, during Typhoon Tip, winds damaged a 5,000-gallon fuel bladder so severely, that it broke and sent fuel gushing downhill towards Quonset huts, housing more than 1,200 Marines and sailors.
The fuel caught fire and wreaked havoc.
The fire burned 15 huts and the camp laundry facility.
It wounded dozens of people at the camp, including Japanese civilians.
It killed 13 Marines.
Every October members of CATC Camp Fuji hold a memorial ceremony to honor in those who lost their lives, were injured, and assisted during the Camp Fuji Fire tragedy that happened.
1979年（昭和54年）10月19日、台風20号（国際名チップ）が引き起こした暴風により、キャンプ富士で使用されていた5000ガロン入りのゴム製燃料タンクの1つが破損しました。漏れ出た燃料は豪雨によってできた川を伝い、1200名を超える海兵隊員や海軍兵が寝泊まりしていた「かまぼこ兵舎」に流れ込んだのです。
その燃料が石油ストーブに引火したことで、大きな火災が引き起こされました。
火災により、兵舎15棟と洗濯施設が焼け落ちしました。
日本人従業員を含め、負傷者は何十名にも上ります。
そして、13名の海兵隊員の命が失われました。
この悲劇で命を落とした隊員を追悼し、負傷した人々、そして迅速な支援を提供してくださった日本の人々に想いをはせるために、キャンプ富士では毎年10月に慰霊祭を行っています。
