What some people consider fun may be questionable, but for the 'gung-ho' on base, the 506th Expeditionary Security Forces Squadron offered up a 'fun day' challenge.
"Most organizations who sponsor the fun day have people run in IBA but our security forces do that every day so we wanted to do something different," said Capt. James Sams, Bravo Sector commander.
The event consisted of using a compass to navigate to various areas around the base. Each team was sent on a different route. The routes varied from 2.3 miles to 3 miles on foot.
"The entire event was a little more physically challenging than I think we expected it to be, but we had a great time," said Master Sgt. Jennifer Anthony, 506th Expeditionary Communications Squadron first sergeant.
Anthony led her team of Tech. Sgt. Oliver Robinson, Staff Sgt. Jerred Mitchell and Airman 1st Class Wes Nelson to take first place in 54 minutes and 32 seconds.
"Teamwork was paramount," she said. "There's no way we could have finished any of the challenges individually; we all bring different strengths to the table and the ECS capitalized on that during the SFS challenge."
In fact, the entire competition needed team work to be successful. The following 506th expeditionary organizations pitched in: ECS, vehicle maintenance, fire house 2, security forces squadron, Top 3, and the medical squadron offered a challenge at their location before the team could move on.
At ECS the teams had to configure a desk top, create an AFN connection and hook up telephone wires to make the phone ring. At vehicle maintenance they had to change a tire. The task at the fire station consisted of spraying cones with a fire hose, and then carrying a 100-pound dummy. During the ESFS portion they had to find five pieces of hidden paraphernalia.
"We wanted people to get a chance to see what other organizations did and learn from that," said Sams.
Four teams competed with ESFS taking second and third place and EMEDS finished off in fourth.
"We really had a fantastic time," said Anthony. "Hats off to cops and everyone else who participated for putting on such a great event."
