Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va.---- Marine Corps Base Quantico, with the help of multiple organizations, hosted the Pathways to College and Career Conference on September 30. The conference was a combined effort between the TGR Foundation, the Department of Defense Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (DoD STEM), and the Marine Corps Community Services School Liaison Program. Held at the Crossroads Elementary School on Quantico, the event was used to help military and DoD-connected students explore opportunities and set them up for success after high school.
“If you want to improve or increase your amount of opportunities in life and more importantly improve or increase your Quality of life… post-secondary education is where it's at,” said U.S. Marine Corps Sgt Maj Collin Barry, sergeant major, Marine Corps Base Quantico. He gained this perspective on education from his father who earned a Ph.D. in Education Management from Kansas State University. Instilled at a young age, Sgt. Maj Barry went on to gain a Ph.D. of his own in Organizational Management and Global Leadership from the Indiana Institute of Technology while serving in the Marine Corps.
The intent of the Tiger Woods Foundation, DoD STEM, and the school liaison program was to provide students with the information and tools that could help them achieve success after high school. Students and parents explored different educational and career options and had the chance to speak with colleges to learn how to make their college application stand out.
John Lee, the TGR Foundation’s senior vice president for Programs and Education, understands that transitioning from high school to adult life is no easy feat. He is intent on giving future graduates the necessary information and resources that can help them as they make tough decisions.
“You have some pretty big choices to make as it relates to your life after you finish high school,” said Lee. “The goal for today is to give you more information and more resources and to support you with what you want to do with the rest of your life.”
The conference was not just giving advice to the students but the parents as well. They were able to learn about scholarships and internships available to military children and how to access and set up financial aid. They were also given classes on supporting their children as they prepare to transition out of high school and into college or internships.
“This is an exciting time… for everyone involved,” said U.S. Marine Corps Col. Michael L. Brooks, the Quantico base commander, who was very happy with the event and what it was doing for the families. “What an incredible opportunity. If you’ve ever heard me talk about Quantico, then you’ve probably heard me talk about Quantico as a village and this is a great day that the village can get together for this opportunity”.
