YOKOSUKA, Japan (September 11, 2023) - 22 years later, the terrorist attacks that took place on September 11, 2001, still profoundly affect the United States and the Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka community (CFAY). To honor the victims of that solemn day, Sailors, Marines, and CFAY community members joined to hold a 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony. The ceremony is an annual tradition onboard CFAY, making this year the 21st consecutive year.

The ceremony began at 0745 with opening remarks delivered by Master Chief Boatswain’s Mate Jeffery Brooks, CFAY’s Command Master Chief. Following his comments, the colors were raised at 0800, observed by dozens of service members saluting the flag as it rose.

"The attacks on September 11th are important for everyone to remember because they galvanized the nation, bringing everyone together," said Brooks, "It was an important day; everyone remembers where they were on that day."

After the colors rose, a group of approximately 100 Sailors and Marines marched down the street and gathered in front of the Chief Petty Officers Club, the location of the September 11th Memorial. The participants stood in a moment of unified silence as bells were rung to represent each hijacked plane and a wreath was placed on the memorial.

"September 11th was a formative day for me. I was in Queens, New York [during the attacks on the World Trade Center], my father was in Manhattan," said Chief Hospital Corpsman Dwayne Lopez, one of the volunteer organizers of the ceremony, "I enlisted in the Navy shortly after."

The ceremony gave the participants an opportunity to reflect on the lives lost on that fateful day, honoring them with an inspirational two-decade old tradition.
