    ARCENT Best Medic Competition

    The Best Medic Competition
    tryouts were held at Camp
    Buehring, Kuwait, on May 10,
    2023, at the ARCENT Readiness
    Training Center. Teams from all
    across the area of responsibility
competed in the event to earn the
    "Best Medic" title and bragging
    rights. The 168th Theater
    Engineer Brigade (TEB) had two
    participants team up and compete
    in the rigorous competition. Both
    participants are Combat Medic
    Specialists (68 Whiskeys) for the
brigade and play a huge role in
    ensuring patients are properly
    treated and cared for when
    needed.
    The 1-160th Infantry Battalion,
    hosted and led the competition
tryouts, which challenged all of the
    involved combat medics on their
    mental agility, proficiency skillset,
and esprit de corps among all
    medics at Camp Buehring.
In Phase III, the tryouts consisted
    of a 72-hour challenge, which
    included the initial one-hour
test lane at the ARTC Classroom
    from May 8–9, 2023. Following
    the initial test, Soldiers went
    through a 10-minute trauma
    scenario followed by a 50-minute
    prolonged field care assessment.
"What this is doing is training the
Soldiers if a real scenario happens
    tomorrow: will they actually be
able to treat it or do they only
know what's on paper?" Staff Sgt. Scott
    Mcgee, 168th Theater Engineer Brigade
    Aid Station Clinical NCOIC.
    Combat medic specialists are one
of the Army's critical assets in today's
    warfight and across the battlefield.
There is no other way to perfect a craft
in the medical field unless you get the
real deal, and that's exactly how the
    Best Medic Competition tryouts were.
The training medics go through is very
    unique and, more importantly, realistic.
    These specialists administer emergency
medical care in the field in both combat
    and humanitarian situations.
It allows the participants to serve as
    first responders and triage illnesses
and injuries to save lives, much like
a paramedic in the civilian world. In
this special case, our two participants
both serve as civilian responders as
    Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs).
So, some of the simulated events
    and activities that the participants
    experienced were nothing new or
unusual that you would typically hear or
    see on the civilian side.
The top three teams will eventually
move on to the final phase of the
    competition, which consists of trauma
interventions at a point of injury (POI),
    tactical patient movement through a
contested area, and prolonged field care
    throughout.
