CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. – The Marine Corps is comprised of dedicated individuals who are ready to answer the Nation’s Call at a moment’s notice. These individuals are United States Marines who come together to form an elite team through shared values of honor, courage, and commitment.
Cpl. Chelsea E. Shampine, an Intelligence Specialist assigned to the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), is no exception to this rule and brought exceptional judgment and a passion for helping others to her military career.
Growing up in Petoskey, Michigan, Shampine became interested in military service after witnessing her older brothers’ transformation while on leave from Marine Corps recruit training.
The challenges and benefits of sense of pride, travel, adventure, and pursuit of higher education enticed her to the United States Marine Corps. Once eligible, she connected with a recruiter and began her journey to becoming a Marine like her brother.
“I have a lot of good memories from recruit training. I made many good friends and built strong bonds with the other recruits around me,” said Shampine. “I remember reading letters from my mom on Sundays with some of my closest friends and how she would write letters to recruits that hadn’t received a letter from home the week before.”
After graduating from Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, Marine Combat Training, and Military Occupation School, Shampine began to distinguish herself at the 24 MEU.
After a few short years, Shampine rose through the ranks to Corporal. Her work ethic and wealth of knowledge became her passion for leading Marines, perfecting her skill sets, and supporting her team.
“Every time I do something, I do everything to put my best foot forward, always analyzing where I can improve. If you are constantly doing your best and getting recognized, it encourages you to continue to do great things.”
As an Intelligence Specialist, Shampine researches, filters, records, analyses, produces, and disseminates information and intelligence on United States adversaries and current world events. The compiled information generates reports to provide a complete and accurate assessment of current world affairs for the Commanding Officer of the 24 MEU.
“I have come to enjoy reading all these reports and learning about the world around me. I find it interesting that there’s so much going on every second of the day, and I’ll find myself learning about something new, and twenty minutes later, I’m about to brief the Commanding Officer.”
The 24 MEU takes pride in Marines like Cpl. Shampine, who foster excellence in their military occupational specialty, holds themselves and others to high moral and professional standards and leads with equality and respect. Through our individual Marines and Sailors, the MEU continues to accomplish its mission of being the nation’s crisis response force and protecting U.S. national interests and security across the globe.
“I want to make a difference in the Corps by showing Marines that hard work and determination pay off. I also want to be an example to other leaders that you can be kind yet stern. Be the kind of leader that makes Marines want to do the best through positive reinforcement and constructive criticism,” said Shampine.
Shampine intends to take the lessons in leadership she has learned from mentors throughout her career and combine them with her passion for excellence and commitment to mission accomplishment to motivate and inspire the next generation of Marines through compassion and understanding.
The 24 MEU is a premier crisis response force capable of landing forces and deploying at a moment’s notice. The skilled 24 MEU Marines and Sailors who comprise the flexible sea-based Marine Air Ground Task Force are ready to answer the Nation’s call to crisis.
