JSS UMM SA'AH, Iraq — In Iraq today, the emphasis is on partnership between Iraqi forces and the U.S. troops assisting them. So, it was fitting when one Soldier wanted to include the Iraqis he works with every day in his re-enlistment, Jan. 9.

It all started when Spc. Isaac Danner, 2nd Squadron, 13th Cavalry Regiment "Sabers" approached Iraqi Department of Border Enforcement Commando commander, Maj. Abdel Hassan about participating.

"I asked Maj. Hasan if we could use his boats for the ceremony and he agreed, asking if he could be a part of it. I said that I wouldn't have it any other way," said Spc. Isaac Danner, an indirect fire infantryman from Mesa, Ariz., assigned to "B" Troop, 2nd Sqdn., 13th Cav. Regt. and supporting Border Transition Team "Fraternity."

Danner's team, who frequent the area where the ceremony was held, operate out of the newly-constructed Joint Security Station Umm Sa'ah. From there, they conduct training with local members of the DBE, ranging from map reading and patrolling techniques to first aid.

"I wanted the ceremony to be a joint effort with the people I see every day and built relationships with," said Danner. "That's why we're here anyway, right?"

The ceremony took place on a picturesque afternoon on the Zubayr River near the commando's border fort.

The Stars & Stripes and Iraqi tri-colored flag fluttered in the wind as Danner took his oath.

The event was memorable, according to 1st Lt. Heather Kaiser a staff officer from Albuquerque, N.M., assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, and one that honored the duty, sacrifice, and continuing service of a dedicated Soldier.

"It was an honor to re-enlist Spc. Danner," she said."The re-enlistment ceremony was memorable because it incorporated our ISF counterparts and illustrated how the DBE and transition teams are really working together as one unit."

After the ceremony, Maj. Hassan spoke of the many ways the United States had helped his nation, and said he and his men felt privileged to be a part of Danner's re-enlistment.
