    Story by Pfc. Matthew Wantroba

    101st Airborne Division (Air Assault)

FORT CAMPBELL, Ky.– Soldiers from across the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) competed in the Best Squad Competition on Fort Campbell, Ky., May 2-5, 2023.

The Best Squad Competition is designed to test how Soldiers work in small groups through a variety of fitness and combat related events.

“It’s amazing, [my team] are all proficient in what they do and I'm comfortable working with them,” said Pfc. Dustin Feldner, 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, when asked about how it is to work with his squad. “They are all great people to be around and they will support you no matter what.”

Feldner was chosen to represent his brigade at the division competition. His team underwent rigorous testing against other teams to win, pushing both physical and mental limits during this competition.

The first day started off with a Army Combat Fitness Test to see where each team stands on physical acuity and then moved on to a M17 pistol qualification. After many rounds were spent, participants rucked almost two miles to a timed obstacle course at The Sabalauski Air Assault School. Throughout the rest of the day, they conducted a M4 and a M249 range and rucked many more miles between each event.

“I definitely enjoyed the M17 range - I haven't done that before'' said Sgt. Mia Elder, 1st Battalion, 320th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team. “The stress shoot was definitely a lot of fun and it's been a great time.”

The second day began with land navigation early in the morning before the sun came up, then straight into medical and Expert Soldier Badge lanes. It then went into a physically rigorous stress shoot after everything else was completed. The 3rd and 4th day were less strenuous, featuring a 12-mile ruck on the third day and a board on the fourth.

This year the squad representing 3rd Brigade came out on top achieving the best overall scores throughout the competition. They will be representing the 101st at XVIII Airborne Corps Best Squad Competition in the next coming months.
