    Expeditionary Strike Group 3

    Capt. Brian Quin relieved Capt. Benjamin Allbritton to become the commodore of Amphibious Squadron (PHIBRON) 5 during a change of command ceremony held aboard amphibious assault ship, USS Boxer, March 3, 2023.

    Rear Adm. James Kirk, commander, Expeditionary Strike Group (ESG) 3, presided over the ceremony and presented Allbritton with a Legion of Merit for his accomplishments while serving as commodore. The ceremony also recognized Allbritton as he retires from the U.S. Navy following 30 years of faithful service.

    Allbritton assumed command on Dec. 9, 2021. His tenure as commodore has seen three maintenance availabilities and PHIBRON 5’s participation in exercise Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2022 and San Francisco Fleet Week 2022. His contributions to advance the Amphibious Force tactically include the expeditionary staff proof of concept during RIMPAC 2022, expeditionary basing operations “Kill Chain” proof of concepts alongside the U.S. Marine Corps during RIMPAC 2022 and Steel Knight 2023, and establishing supported and supporting relationships between the commander amphibious task force and commander landing force during integrated Navy-Marine Corps operations.

    “Capt. Allbritton has always given his all, as evidenced by the dedication of those who have ever served with him,” said Kirk. “He is everything you would want in a boss, and everything you want in a subordinate. He is a true professional, and it has been an honor to serve with him.”

    Allbritton thanked his family and his PHIBRON 5 team for their continued support and expressed his gratitude at the conclusion of 30 years of naval service.

    “It has been an honor to not only serve alongside my fellow brothers and sisters of Amphibious Squadron 5 for the last year and half, but all fellow shipmates over the past 30 years,” said Allbritton. “This career is truly an unforgettable one that requires brave men and women such as you all here today. Thank you for your commitment to duty and your country.”

    In his remarks, Quin congratulated Allbritton on his successful career and addressed the crew for the first time as commodore.

    “Ben, I have long admired your professionalism, thoroughness, effectiveness, thoughtfulness, and kindness. It is my honor to be your successor as commander of Amphibious Squadron Five. Best wishes for continued success as a master mariner instructor training our next generation of naval officers,” he said. “To the staff and shipmates of PHIBRON 5, we will continue to work hard to advance Navy and Marine Corps warfighting readiness and ensure we push ourselves every day to promote a more lethal and flexible integrated force.”

    Quin received his commission in 1991 through the NROTC program at Northwestern University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts (with honors) in history. He earned a Master of Arts (with distinction) in national security and strategic studies from the Naval War College in 2007. Ashore, he has served as maritime homeland defense officer in the operations directorate (J-3) of the Joint Staff, as deputy executive assistant and flag aide to Commander, U.S. 3rd Fleet, and as combat systems officer (N65) for commander, Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet. Most recently, he served as chief of staff to commander, ESG 3.

    PHIBRON 5 was established in September 1954 and has been based in San Diego since its inception. The command’s mission is to prepare for and direct expeditionary warfare missions in support of national objectives by employing the combat power of amphibious ships and the Marine Corps in the maritime, littoral, and inland environments. Most recently, PHIBRON 5 and various Marine Expeditionary Units have completed multiple deployments to the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations in support of strengthening partnerships with global allies.
