RAMSTEIN AIR BASE, Germany – U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. John Klein, U.S. Air Force Expeditionary Center commander, and Chief Master Sgt. Courtney Freeman, USAFEC command chief, attended an immersion tour with the 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, Feb. 23, 2023.

Klein and Freeman visited the 721st Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, the 721st Aerial Port Squadron and the 721st Mission Support Squadron during their tour.

“It is so critical that this place is a hub for global mobility,” Klein said. “You all make it happen daily. What you do for global air mobility operations is tremendous.”

Airmen assigned to the 721st AMXS briefed them on their mission overview and demonstrated virtual reality capabilities. The virtual reality lab is used by maintainers to learn new skills and retain knowledge and makes training accessible.

Klein and Freeman also toured the Ramstein Passenger Terminal. The 721st APS plays a crucial role for service members while in-processing or out-processing. One of their largest responsibilities is assisting service members, families and their pets while traveling to, through, and from Germany.

After touring the PAX terminal, they moved next door to tour the 721st APS warehouse where they were briefed on support given during various missions such as Operation Fly Formula and Operation Allies Refuge as well as the role the 10th Expeditionary Aeromedical Evacuation Flight plays in inter-theater AE operations.

They also rode an elevating transfer vehicle. The ETV is part of the Mechanized Material Handling System, a mission-critical way for pallets to be transported to and from storage areas prior to being loaded on aircraft.

The tour was wrapped up by a visit at the 721st MSS Air Mobility Control Center. The AMCC acts as a specialized command and control element in the 521st AMOW. Airmen in the AMCC keep track of assets moving in and out and Ramstein while providing information to outgoing and incoming aircrew and group support for aircraft.

“We have a vantage point as your organizational leaders where we can stand back and watch this all happen,” Klein said. “It’s an orchestra and it’s magic to watch the problem solving happen.”
