WASHINGTON - Headquarters, District of Columbia Air National Guard (DCANG) recently earned the Air Force Organizational Excellence Award (AFOEA) for its contingency planning, support of local and federal civil authorities in the Nation's Capital and other meritorious service, from Jan. 1, 2020 to Dec 31, 2021. DCANG headquarters is one of only five units to be selected across the United States for the designation for this award period.

“Our Airmen understand that credibility is earned every day and can be fleeting in nature,” said Brig. Gen. Shannon D. Smith, Commander of DCANG’s 113th Wing. “This award also speaks to the value proposition that the D.C. Air National Guard offers to the total Air Force and our National Defense Strategy,”

Headquarters, DCANG has earned the award on five prior occasions—the first of which was received for service from 1989 to 1991. Approximately 48 Airmen assigned to Headquarters will receive the award which recognizes the achievements and accomplishments of the U.S. Air Force organization or activities.

“I’m so proud of our team,” said Major David M. Schonberg, interim Director of Staff, DCANG. “Their hard work and commitment to the mission has simply been extraordinary over these last few years. Receiving this award let’s everyone know that you can count on the D.C. Air National Guard to get the job done.”

During the award period, Headquarters responded to three unprecedented historic crises of significant importance, fulfilling its mission to support and defend the National Capital Region, its citizens and the nation by maintaining ready, trained and equipped military forces; and supported the District of Columbia during special security events, natural disasters, and other contingency operations. In early 2020, Headquarters provided COVID-19 response participating in mortuary affairs, warehouse operations, field hospital creation, testing site operation, and law enforcement support. During civil disturbance events in the summer of the same year, Headquarters responded through direct support of three major operations where 3,300 National Guard members assisted federal and local law enforcement partners to preserve the First Amendment. The following year, Headquarters oversaw the largest mobilization of National Guard troops since the Civil War, responding to the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol and the 59th Presidential Inauguration. During these events, they received, sustained and redeployed more than 26,000 Guard members from the 50 states, three U.S. territories and the District of Columbia. Additionally, Headquarters had several lines of effort to improve the organization and support the 113th Wing and its mission.

"This award speaks volumes to the hard work, dedication, and professionalism that our Airmen bring to our critical mission here in the D.C. Air National Guard,” said Chief Master Sgt. Sterlin G. Wilson, Command Chief of the 113th. "It is a great example of what happens when diversity, inclusion and teamwork come together to accomplish the mission. Our work here is hard and unique, but we are really good at it and our team should be really proud of this accomplishment."

Headquarters, DCANG components and responsibilities include the 113th Wing located at Joint Base Andrews, Joint Staff operations located at the District of Columbia National Guard's Armory, the 33rd Civil Support Team and assisting the Commanding General in accomplishing her responsibilities for strategic direction of the D.C. National Guard forces, their operation under unified command, and their integration into an efficient team of land and air forces.

"Our citizen airmen are the epitome of the Air Force Core Values," said Wilson. "We treasure their service with the DCANG, the community, and the United States Air Force. We could not be more proud of them and are beyond grateful for their service."
