HACKSAW RIDGE MEETS KINSER BATTLE OF OKINAWA HISTORICAL DISPLAY／前田高地案内人、キンザー沖縄戦歴史資料館訪問

A rare sight was seen at the Kinser Battle of Okinawa Historical Display Aug. 1, 2022, when a group of visitors toured while talking to each other without a guide to lead them. The person who normally explains each exhibit was not saying anything, but instead just followed the group.

They were all from the Uraosoi Historical Guide Fellowship that guides the historical site tours in Urasoe City, specifically areas around Urasoe castle ruins in the Maeda Highlands. The highlands are also known as "Hacksaw Ridge" named by the U.S. military during the Pacific War for its rugged appearance.

"We got the information of the Kinser Battle of Okinawa Historical Display from Urasoe City public relations magazine," said Yoshihiro Teruya, who organized and coordinated this tour through the city's Military Base Conversion Division. "Eight members came, we wanted to come where we could see the real artifacts."

Since the fellowship guides' tours are mainly the Maeda Highlands, they were already familiar with the historical background of the Battle of Okinawa.

"I don't need to guide them. They could be more knowledgeable of the items we have here than me," said Ichino Doshida, community relations specialist for Camp Kinser. "I respect that."

As soon as the tour started, their eyes fixated on a bomb display. The members started discussing the sizes of the different munitions and the amount of destruction caused by the hundreds of thousands of bombs and artillery shells used during the Battle of Okinawa.

Another pointed out that a *shell display still has a fuse and could be an unexploded bomb. One said that it should be empty because it's a display, then started to explain the mechanism of the artillery fuse.

At a spot where the picture of the U.S. landing on Yomitan, they debated with each other whether air balloons were used in Okinawa or Normandy.

In front of a Type 99 light machine gun display, they tried to find out how heavy it was. One read the note and said "no specific weight is shown but it says it is very heavy."

They stopped at every display, observed and read the note written in English on the panel. They seemed not to want to miss any details about the items.

At the Hacksaw Ridge showcase, one said he actually dug out a medical kit that combat medics likely carried in one of the caves he searched.

"I expected this place to just show war tools and weapons like most of the displays and museums do in the tourist sites," said Makoto Nakamura, who visited the display for the first time as a member of the Uraosoi Historical Guide Fellowship and also the director of Okinawa Peace Memorial Museum Fellowship.

Nakamura, however, continued that it impressed him when he saw the Kinser Battle of Okinawa Historical Display had an exhibit describing the situation of the so-called "Southern Retreat" in which the Japanese army abandoned their headquarters in Shuri and moved to the south. That resulted in many residents caught up in the fighting and losing their lives.

"It was a relief to see that this place was not just a war museum displaying war weapons, but also exhibited the perspective of the victims of the Battle of Okinawa," Nakamura added.

The group said that they want to come back again, hoping that next time they can see the exhibits from different angles and points of view, and to bring members who were unable to come this time.

　２０２２年８月１日、キンザー沖縄戦歴史資料館にて、ガイド役の案内もなく、グループで話し合いながら観覧する珍しい光景が見られた。いつもは各展示物の説明をする担当者が、何も言わず、ただ集団の後をついていくのだ。

　この一行は皆、浦添市周辺の史跡巡り、特に前田高地の浦添城跡周辺を案内する「うらおそい歴史ガイド友の会」の会員である。 前田高地は、その荒々しい姿から戦時中に米軍が命名した「ハクソー・リッジ」とも呼ばれる場所だ。

　今回の見学を企画し、同市の跡地未来課を通じて調整した友の会副理事長兼総務部長の照屋善博さんは、「浦添市の広報誌に、キンザー沖縄戦歴史資料館の案内がありました。８人の会員が参加しました。私たちは直に本物（遺物・遺品）が見られるところに来たかったのです。」

　友の会のガイドツアーは前田高地が中心であるため、沖縄戦に関する歴史的背景はすでに熟知していた。

　「私が案内する必要はないんです。彼らは私よりもここにある品物に詳しいかもしれません」と、キャンプ・キンザーの土信田一乃渉外官は言う。「私はそれを尊重します。」

　ツアーが始まるや否や、彼らは立ち止まった。彼らの視線の先にあるのは、爆弾の展示物だ。沖縄戦で使われた何十万発もの爆弾や砲弾の大きさ、破壊の度合いなどを、メンバーで話し合った。

　またある参加者は、*砲弾の展示物にはまだ信管が付いており、不発弾の可能性があると指摘したが、別の一人が、展示物なのだから空でなくてはならないと言い、砲弾の信管の仕組みを説明し始めた。

　読谷への米軍上陸時の写真がある場所では、沖縄とノルマンディーのどちらで気球が使われたかをお互いに議論した。

　九九式軽機関銃の展示の前では、その重さを確かめようとし、一人はメモを読んで、「具体的な重量は表示されていないが、非常に重いと書いてある」と言った。

　どの展示物にも足を止め、じっくりと観察し、展示物に書かれている英語のメモを熱心に読んでいく。彼らは、その展示物の詳細を見逃すまいとしているようだった。

　ハクソー・リッジの展示コーナーでは、遺品を見ながら自分が調べた洞窟の中から、戦闘中の衛生兵が持っていたであろう医療キットを実際に掘り出したことがあると話す人もいた。

　初めて資料館を訪れた、「うらおそい歴史ガイド友の会」の会員であり、「沖縄県平和祈念資料館友の会」の事務局長でもある仲村真さんは、「観光地にあるような戦闘道具や 武器などを展示しただけの場所だと思っていました」と話す。

　しかし、仲村さんは、日本軍が首里の司令部を捨てて南方に移動し、多くの住民が戦闘に巻き込まれて命を落とした、いわゆる「南部撤退」の状況を説明する展示を見て、感銘を受けたと続けた。

　「ここが戦争兵器だけを展示した戦争博物館ではなく、沖縄戦における犠牲者の目線からも展示されていることが分かり、安心しました。」

　一行は、次は違った角度や視点から展示物を見ることができるように、今回来ることが出来なかった会員も連れて、もう一度来たいと話した。
