FORWARD OPERATING BASE, Romania – U.S. Army Soldiers of the Recon Platoon, Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC), 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) conduct a call for fire (CFF) operation with a RQ-11 Raven Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) on Jan. 30, 2023. Soldiers of the Recon Platoon were supported by a mortar platoon to test how accurate and feasible CFF using the UAV would be on a target.
“The RV-11 Raven is a UAV used to gather photos and videos from the air,” said U.S. Army Pfc. Austin Herd. “The Raven helps observe indirect fire by confirming whether or not a target was hit.”
Using a Raven gives Soldiers the chance to be more accurate in their indirect fire overall. Training with the Raven helps prepare Soldiers for future engagements by increasing efficiency and accuracy.
“I would say this training affects our ability for mortar fire by pulling an accurate grid to call for fire and at that point, also confirming it,” said Herd.
As technology advances, warfare advances as well. The Soldiers of today need to be equipped with the best gear in order to prepare for future engagements.
“I feel like this training is very realistic because this type of technology has been used a lot by other countries,” said Herd. “It has proven very reliable and provides great capabilities. The Raven is a system that keeps soldiers from being directly on the frontlines and makes it possible to get an up front look of what you’re doing.”
As Soldiers prepare for the future engagement, training with new technology like the Raven will increase our effectiveness and will lead to a more mission ready fighting force.
