On Thursday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers kicked off its 43rd annual "Special Day for Special People" event. Groups of mentally and physically challenged individuals of all ages in the local community were invited to attend as well as several elderly groups.
The event was held, for the first time in two years, at the Rocky Point recreational site and stretched from the picnic area to the boat docks. Buses from schools and nursing homes filled the parking lot along the beach.
Activities included a photo booth, pontoon boat rides, a petting zoo, bouncy castles, mini train and hayrides, a DJ with a stage, and free food and drink.
"We started doing this in 1977 as just a small picnic as we had a lot of handicapped facilities available at the time," said Chief Park Ranger David Barr. "This year, we have more than 500 people, and it wouldn't be possible without all the sponsors and volunteers."
Volunteers with the Corps of Engineers, Publix, Wild Animal Safari, Coca-Cola, the City of LaGrange, Alabama Forestry Commission, Highland Marina, and Southern Harbor Marina all offered their free time and services to make the event possible.
Natural Resources Chief Ranger David Scott said it is one of the project's most significant events of the year and a personal favorite of his.
"It's just a great time to see everyone come outside and have fun together again," said Scott. "It is a perfect opportunity for people to enjoy themselves and learn about this resource, the Corps, and water safety all at once."
