    174th Attack Wing

New York Air National Guard Lt. Col. Misty J. Looney, assumed command of the 174th Medical Group (MDG) in a ceremony on Hancock Field Air National Guard Base, Saturday, December 3, 2022.

Looney replaced Col. Roxellen Auletto, who had commanded the 174th MDG since 2019.

Col. William J. McCrink III, 174th Attack Wing commander, was the presiding official for the ceremony.

The formal assumption of command ceremony is a ceremony rooted in history, dating back to the Roman Legions. Military organizations developed flags or colors unique to their unit. Soldiers followed their colors into battle, and always knew whom to look to for leadership. The public exchange of colors acknowledged the formal change of command.

Prior to commanding the 174th MDG, Looney was Chief of the Air National Guard Public Health and Prevention Branch, Air National Guard Readiness Center, Joint Base Andrews. Looney is responsible for providing leadership and direction to Air National Guard enterprise wide Public Health-based prevention programs and initiatives including strategic planning, policy and guidance development; advocating for resources; program execution and effectiveness assessment and other public health and prevention medicine expertise required in the operation of the Air National Guard’s 90 Medical Units across 54 territories and the National Guard Bureau.

Since being commissioned, Looney has held positions at the 96th Medical Group at Eglin AFB, the 186th Air Refueling Wing, the 179th Air Lift Wing, Public Health at Nellis AFB, the Combat Readiness Training Center, Joint Base Andrews, and now Hancock Field.

As for major awards and decorations, Looney has received the Meritorious Service Medal, Air and Space Commendation Medal, Air and Space Outstanding Unit Award, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, and the Nuclear Deterrence Service Medal.

Looney will be the third Medical Group Commander since 2013.
