For Wildaly Honaker-Medina, a native of San Juan, Puerto Rico, taking that leap of faith meant leaving behind her family, friends and home, and venturing to an unfamiliar region for an opportunity to utilize her expertise and technical skillset in computer science and software development.

“When I first entered into the computer science field, I wasn’t quite sure which area I wanted to pursue. After seeing the growing trend and advancements in software technology, I was motivated to explore it professionally,” said Honaker-Medina. “The field is so diverse with endless possibilities to expand the technology.”

She learned about Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) and the work that Dahlgren is known for after attending a college job fair at the University of Puerto Rico, Bayamon, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in computer science in 2006.

Fifteen years later, she focuses on driving change, innovation and technical rigor for software development within the Strategic and Computing Systems Department at NSWCDD.

“There is a uniqueness to working at NAVSEA and Dahlgren, and that is the wide array of technological disciplines that provides employees the ability to explore different career paths,” said Honaker-Medina.

Honaker-Medina held positions at Dahlgren, such as group lead, project lead and acting branch head within the department where she exhibits outstanding leadership and devotes her time to mentoring new hires and interns.

“Encouraging diversity of thought and inclusion in a trustworthy environment is critical to discovering optimal solutions and finding innovative methods to develop and deliver capabilities to our warfighter,” she said.

In support of the Submarine Launch Ballistic Missile (SLBM) program, Honaker-Median works to increase technical capability in the software development process by standardizing test procedures, driving innovation in test development and automation.

Recently, she pioneered the SLBM Integrated and System Test team to adapt to an agile development framework, which proved to be a critical team in the development of SLBM Fire Control.

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Honaker-Medina is highlighted for her vast technical expertise, leadership, mentoring and outstanding contributions in advancing software technology.
