Employees from across the Army Materiel Command enterprise were recognized recently for their contributions to materiel readiness in a variety of areas, from propellants and ammunition to COVID-19 accountability and depot audits.

The innovative contributions of the 10 employees had a direct positive impact on AMC’s mission goals, and led to their recognition as Employees of the Quarter for the second quarter, fiscal year 2022. The award also recognizes their commitment to progressing a culture of achievement and productivity, contributing to a positive work environment, increasing retention, and improving employee engagement to impact overall morale.

“AMC’s success is directly the result of the dedication and expertise of our employees,” said AMC Chief of Staff Maj. Gen. Walt Duzzny. “It is an honor to be able to recognize AMC employees who exemplify the work ethic and know-how of our entire workforce. Congratulations to these teammates who have earned this recognition through the contributions they have made to the Army’s mission."

Darion Boone, who is the employee of the quarter representing AMC’s headquarters at Redstone Arsenal, said the recognition is much appreciated and improves workplace morale. As an AMC G-1 (Human Resources) employee, Boone works closely on G-1 initiatives that affect the workforce.

“The recognition of employees for their performance and contributions is one way we are addressing the AMC People Strategy to value the contributions of our workforce,” Boone said. “By recognizing an employee for what they do it leads to a positive work environment and higher retention levels of our diverse workforce.”

Although Boone’s main focus is the oversight of the AMC Civilian Overseas Tours and Entitlements, Injury Compensation, Spouse Employment and Telework programs, the Employee of the Quarter award recognizes his support of the President’s Federal COVID-19 vaccination mandate for civilian employees, ensuring 100% accountability of the COVID vaccination status for 85,000 civilian employees. Boone represented AMC in collaborating on a daily basis with the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civilian Personnel staff to report and validate the AMC civilian vaccination data.

“I looked at it as a challenge and I like that aspect, it was something new and very important. Someone needed to take it on at that time I had the capacity to handle it without impacting any of my other work,” Boone said.

As the command with the largest civilian population in the Army, Boone’s initiative was instrumental in the successful completion of 40,000 civilian vaccination records to ensure the health and safety of the global AMC workforce and enforce the Presidential order. Additionally, Boone provided support to AMC’s overseas civilian workforce by providing oversight, guidance and advice on overseas tours and benefits as the command worked to manage mission requirements in Europe while also working to keep employees healthy.

“I hope my contributions gave AMC leadership and the Department of the Army a better visualization of the vaccination status of their employees, which allowed for them to make the right decisions for their workforce and planning, allowing employees to have clear instructions on the way forward during the COVID-19 pandemic,” Boone said.

While Boone’s recognition is based on his work within AMC’s Human Resources channels, Army Contracting Command’s Benjamin Gillen’s recognition involves providing contracting support for Holston Army Ammunition Plant and Radford Army Ammunition Plant. Holston is the primary source of explosives used in nearly every lethal system with the Department of Defense from bombs and missiles to hand grenades, mortars, tanks and artillery ammunition. Radford is the only U.S. and Canadian supplier of a key ingredient required by propellants used in more than 90% of lethal munitions used by brigade combat teams.
Gillen aligned a strategic plan to ensure the successful execution of an $8 billion Holston competition to replace a 25-year contract term, and a $1 billion five-year contract extension at Radford.

“Having the opportunity to work these programs the last few years has provided me with the ability to positively impact a multitude of DoD customers, which I enjoy and take great pride in,” Gillen said. “I hope my work helps to ensure Army readiness through the continued supply of vital propellants and propellant components that are used across the ammunition supply chain.”

The Employee of the Quarter recognition, Gillen said, encourages ACC employees to be proactive in determining contracting solutions to ensure Army materiel readiness.

“Receiving awards like this reiterate the tremendous support we have from AMC leadership to confidently pursue unique and innovative approaches to fulfilling warfighter needs through contracting,” Gillen said.
