Meet Damage Controlman 2nd Class Adam Vincent! He is currently an instructor at the Navy's only boot camp.
“I’ve always had a passion for the military. My grandfather was in the Air Force for 27 years.
He has always inspired me to be greater than I ever thought I could be. I knew from a very young age I wanted to be in the military.”
Vincent had decided on joining the Navy after speaking with recruiters from all branches. His journey to being greater than himself began when he chose the damage controlman rate.
“I didn’t even know what my job was until I got to my first command. And that’s when I fell in love with it. I had a very motivated workshop that I worked for Instilled the motivation in me to be better than I was.”
Vincent attributes a lot of who he is today to his leadership he had at his past command.
“Chief Cox and Senior Chief Thompson were probably the two biggest driving factors in who I am as a person, a Sailor and how I am as an instructor. They instilled in me the passion that I have for my job to this day.”
That passion was what brought DC2 to Recruit Training Command (RTC). His passion to teach.
“I’ve always wanted to teach, ever since my first time going to a fire trainer in Mayport, Florida. When I went to the fire trainer there for flight deck certifications, I saw the camaraderie the other instructors had with each other. Being able to teach what I’m passionate about, firefighting and damage control. I’ve always wanted to pass the knowledge that I’ve been given.”
DC2 doesn’t just contribute the drive he has to just the Navy. He also owes a lot of it to being a husband and a father.
“My biggest driving force at this point is my family. Being able to provide for them and give them everything they need keeps me going. From diapers to medical bills and anything in between, I know they’re taken care of.”
At a command as rigorous and challenging as RTC, Vincent knows it’s not something he can do alone.
“When I got here at RTC, it was made very clear to me that they are very willing to make
time for us if we have a family emergency. If my son has a doctor’s appointment, my command has no problem getting me off the schedule to go take care of it. I remember my wife came
down with a pretty bad cold and she could not take care of my son while I was at work. My command let me go home so I could take care of my son and let my wife sleep. That meant a lot to my family.”
With all the challenges and rigor the mission of RTC has to offer of turning civilians into Sailors, Vincent would do it all again.
“I just try to instill passion in these recruits and it’s not easy, but it’s worth it. It’s rewarding. I would come here again if I could. I don’t feel like I made a mistake.”
