BEMOWO PISKIE, Poland – NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battle Group Poland (eFP) commanders and non-commissioned officers (NCOs) assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment (3-8 CAV), 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division (3-1 ABCT) operationally controlled by the 1st Infantry Division, alongside U.K. Army commanders and NCOs assigned to The Royal Lancers, Prince of Whales Troop, and the Romanian Sky Guardians participated in a combined arms rehearsal (CAR) and emergency deployment ready exercise (EDRE) in Bemowo Piskie, Poland, Nov. 1, 2022.

A CAR is a rehearsal of tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) that enables subordinate companies and units to synchronize and confirm the commander's intent.

“We conducted our Battle Group combined arms rehearsal for our alert-marshal-deploy plan, which is an ongoing order and plan to notify Soldiers of a potential mission,” said U.S. Army Maj. Eric Yost, executive officer of the 3-8 CAV, 3-1 ABCT. “It ready’s the Soldiers and consolidates them to plan for and execute a follow-on task, whether that’s a range, an exercise, or real world operation to deter further aggression in this region of the world.”

Ongoing rehearsals and exercises like these strengthen synchronization and improve communication capabilities between U.S. forces and NATO allied forces to rapidly respond to deter or defend against aggression.

“This is very important for all of us, because we have to work together and cooperate, we have to stay together,” said Capt. Rares David, operations staff officer of the Romanian Sky Guardians. “Cooperation and cohesion in working together is very important for interoperability and for this region.”

Engagement rehearsals enable critical analysis of logistics and tactical synchronization for U.S. and NATO allied partners to rapidly react, and deploy in response to conflict.

“The Romanians, the British, the Croatians, the Polish, and the United States have sent their first teams to this Battle Group,” said U.S. Army Lt. Col. Sean M. Castilla, commander of Battle Group Poland, commander of 3-8 CAV, 3-1 ABCT. “We are prepared, we are united, and we are determined to answer NATO’s call, should this Battlegroup have to respond to defend our Allies and our alliances, as one team.”

Through battle drills and rehearsals such as the CAR, gaining familiarization with procedure, logistics, tactics, assets and equipment strengthens interoperability among U.S. and NATO partners.

“These types of rehearsals and exercises get Soldiers in the mental mindset that we could go into combat within a moment’s notice,” said Yost. “Our plans and our systems that we have in place enable us to do just that, we indeed can go from no notice to fully staged, ready to execute any mission rapidly and efficiently.”

Conducting exercises and rehearsals with various leadership and a multinational NATO defense force takes intent, coordination and determination to ensure unit cohesion amongst the Battle Group Alliance.

“This is our battle state of mind, we are fit to fight, and we are credibly combat ready as a battlegroup,” said Castilla. “We are here to show our dedication, our efficiency, our determination to our NATO alliance, we are one team.”

These battle drills, such as the CAR, allows units to gain familiarization with procedure, logistics, tactics, assets and equipment, and strengthens interoperability among U.S. and NATO partners.

“We’ve incorporated our NATO allies into the planning and execution, integrated them into our battle drills, and that is so important for interoperability,” said Yost. “We have four different countries' militaries in this Battle Group, and executing synchronized operations shows our Allies that we are ready to fight immediately if that call comes, and sends that same strategic message to any aggressors in this region.”

The CAR offers critical opportunities to build unit cohesion and interoperability while strengthening the mission-capable status of U.S. and partner nations' forces within eFP Battle Group Poland.

“Each and every soldier within this battlegroup, from the private to the lieutenant colonel, is the embodiment of our NATO alliance, and our commitment to the deterrence of aggression and the defense of hostel forces to the borders of the Eastern front,” said Castilla.
