NEWPORT, R.I. – Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division Newport’s Command Review and Investigations (CR&I) Office recently won the 2022 Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) Inspector General (IG) CR&I Office Standing Ovation Award. The annual award is presented to one multi-person CR&I Office across the NAVSEA IG enterprise to include warfare centers, shipyards and regional maintenance centers.

The CR&I Office is responsible for three core functions: Hotlines and Investigations, Command Evaluation Internal Reviews, and serving as the External Audit Liaison. Staff honored are North Kingstown, Rhode Island residents Dan Benson, director, and Mark Zedella; and Denise Levasseur of New Bedford, Massachusetts. Zedella and Levasseur handle program reviews, investigations and external audits.

“The NAVSEA Inspector General hereby recognizes the dedication, collective energy, strong pursuit of excellence, and positive impact that had led to your team’s effective execution of all CR&I Office functions at NUWC Division Newport,” the award states.

Staff were presented with the award during the NAVSEA IG Annual Symposium held on Sept. 20.

“This award reflects the hard work of the whole office,” Benson said. Without the contributions of each team member, winning an award like this is not possible.”

Division Newport’s CR&I Office performs the role of an IG, and shares the same mission of an IG Office: to investigate, evaluate, assess, and inquire into matters of importance to command leadership, NUWC Headquarters leadership, and the NAVSEA IG. The CR&I Office reports directly to the Division Newport commanding officer in order to provide an independent and objective assessment of the overall economy, efficiency, and integrity of all command functions.

At Division Newport, the Hotline Program provides a mechanism for reporting fraud, waste, abuse, mismanagement, or other wrongdoing.

Benson, who also won the Key Contributor Award for fiscal year 2021, stated that one of the overarching goals of the CR&I Office “is to prevent and detect cases of fraud, waste, and abuse. In order to do this effectively, it is critical that employees speak up when they see something.”

NUWC Newport is the oldest warfare center in the country, tracing its heritage to the Naval Torpedo Station established on Goat Island in Newport Harbor in 1869. Commanded by Capt. Chad Hennings, NUWC Newport maintains major detachments in West Palm Beach, Florida, and Andros Island in the Bahamas, as well as test facilities at Seneca Lake and Fisher's Island, New York, Leesburg, Florida, and Dodge Pond, Connecticut.
