FORT SILL, Okla. (Nov. 8, 2022) – In final preparations to begin a regularly scheduled deployment to the Republic of Korea, the 2nd Battalion, 4th Field Artillery Regiment, Deep Attack, conducted a Casing of the Colors ceremony.

The battalion will be joining the 210th Field Artillery Brigade to continue mission readiness said Lt. Col. DaMond Davis, battalion commander. Deployments to Korea typically last under a year.

Davis said he is “extremely confident” in his battalion’s capabilities. Like every battalion commander, Davis is excited to deploy with his soldiers and conduct the missions they have trained for, “we’ve trained hard and long in the heat and in the cold.”

“I’m fully confident and have all the faith and trust in all of our soldiers, our noncommissioned officers and officers.” said Command Sgt. Maj. Joshua Marteliz.

Along with the soldiers being prepared, their families are a part of a great support system through the 75th Field Artillery Brigade, “We’re a team. We’re a big family.”

The casing of the colors is a traditional ceremony conducted before a unit goes upon a deployment — representing the transition from their home station to their deployment location. The colors will be escorted to Korea by the battalions senior NCO and will remain cased until Davis arrives, at which time the reunited command team will uncase the colors.

The practices and usage of military flags date back to the Revolutionary War and have evolved in American military history ever since. The colors symbolize a unit's lineage, its honors, and its identity. The colors represent all soldiers past, present and future, and the colors stand as a silent reminder of the past glories as well as an inspiration for future endeavors.

“You have repeatedly proved your readiness to conduct this mission on behalf of the nation and have demonstrated to each other, the Army and to our nation's adversaries, your lethal potential.” said Brigade Commander, Col. David Norris before giving the command to “Deploy your unit.”
