Veterans Day: A Day to Remember

My grandpa, Joseph Honce III, served in the Navy and retired as an SK5 storekeeper. He is kind and patient and is always willing to lend a helping hand. These traits affect not only my family and me but the rest of the community. Joseph, or "Joe" as he likes to go by, is one of the first to volunteer at polling locations and his local church. Joe's time in the Navy helped cultivate these admirable traits and habits that he bestows upon everyone with today.

Joe joined the active duty Navy when the Vietnam war started. Although he never saw combat, he still served at a crucial time when his country needed him most.

"It means more to me now than it did back then," said Honce. "It was right after Vietnam that I got out and there's a lot of guys that turned out pretty bad after they got out."

On Veterans day every year, Joe instinctively thinks about one of his old buddies who was sent to Vietnam. Veterans day reminds him of the sacrifice his friend and many others made to protect our nation's freedom.

"We had a friend named Dan Looby who has since died since he got home, he came back kind of messed up, agent orange and all that."

Joe reminisced about how service members were treated as they returned from Vietnam. He is thankful that veterans are now honored and can get the support they need to thrive and prosper after their service.

"The most common thing for them was to spit on soldiers when they got off the airplanes, and call them 'baby killers.'"

For Joe, Veterans day is not just another day to honor our Military; it's something more personal. Veterans day is when we remember those who served this great nation and the sacrifices they made for their country.
