William Beaumont Army Medical Center's physical therapy department (PT) held an open house at the main hospital campus on October 26, 2022, in support of National Physical Therapy Month.

“Our open house allowed WBAMC staff and providers to learn more about how physical therapy can augment their care and help patients achieve their goals. We allowed attendees to walk through our PT gym and experience equipment unique to our field, such as blood flow restriction therapy. Individuals could try stretches from our mobility class, practice resistance training techniques, and speak with our team about what PT can do for them and their patients,” said Capt. Emily Hussing, a physical therapy officer in charge of inpatient PT at WBAMC.

The physical therapy department can diagnose and treat patients with medical problems or other health conditions, including management of movement dysfunction and enhancing physical and functional abilities. The department also helps people get back to their best health, fitness, and quality of life regarding how they move and feel.

“Our services can be significant for our active duty Soldiers to help them optimize their performance and return to the fight. During the open house, people can see our providers and ask any questions they might have,” said Hussing.

The PT department provides post-operative care, musculoskeletal care, neuromuscular care, vestibular, stroke, spinal cord injury, trauma, gait training, manual therapy, balance training, fall prevention, resistance training, trigger point dry needling, blood flow restriction therapy, and patient education.

“We love to raise awareness about the role of physical therapy in patient care in order to promote a patient-centered team approach to patient care and optimize outcomes. Physical therapists are trained to recognize, manage, and treat musculoskeletal conditions using exercise, manual techniques, and various evidence-based modalities. Physical therapists are movement experts who are trained to handle a variety of illnesses and injuries to help our warfighters meet their goals,” said Hussing.

The American Physical Therapy Association created National Physical Therapy Month to promote physical activity and increase awareness of the advantages of physical therapy. It is also necessary to recognize physical therapists, physical therapy assistants, and physical therapy technicians throughout this month.

For those seeking an appointment, please contact a primary care manager to obtain a physical therapy referral. The WBAMC first floor, east clinic is open Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Also, sick call hours for active duty’s Soldiers are from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. on Tuesdays and Fridays.
