Twenty-one 6-person teams of U.S. Marines assigned to units on Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Cherry Point, came together to compete in the 25th Annual All-Terrain Unit Competition at Devil Dog Dare, MCAS Cherry Point, North Carolina, Oct. 28, 2022. The competition, organized by Marine Corps Community Services (MCCS) Cherry Point, offers units the opportunity to engage in friendly competition, build comradery and teamwork, and win unit funds.

“It’s a really fun competition,” said Carrie Barrow, Semper Fit director. “It gets you out doing something with your peers that’s outside of work.”

The event is held the last Friday of October, so participants are welcomed to wear costumes as part of its costume competition. Teams ran more than seven miles and completed five challenges. Throughout the competition, participants needed to utilize teamwork, strategy, and endurance to win.

“Even if you don’t like running, it’s a fun competition,” Barrow said. “You run to each challenge and then stop to do it. You don’t even realize how far you’ve gone until the finish.”

Over the competition’s 25-year existence, the course has never been the same. It is designed uniquely to offer an element of surprise to participating units.

“This was the first year we had a blind start and a blind finish,” Barrow said. “It made the competition a little bit more mentally and physically challenging.”

Winning teams received trophies, as well as cash prizes. First place received $600, second place received $400, third place won $200, and costume contest winners received $100. This year, “Power Plant #1” took home first place, which was a group of Marines from Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 14. “Maxiumum Effort,” a group of Marines from Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 2, won the costume contest with their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle outfits.

Barrow said she hopes to see more people register next year. Her only recommendation is to get signed up early to ensure their teams place in the excitement.
