Andrea Zabel has been a member of the Naval Station (NAVSTA) Rota community since 2018. During her time here, she has been an active member within the Rota community, particularly the Rota Girl Scouts organization where she serves as the Overseas Community Chair.
“The Girl Scouts are a girl-led organization,” she explained. “So as Chair, I try to help the girls realize they can achieve their goals. We organize events with and for the girls based off their wants. If they want to learn a special skill or go exploring, my team and I work together to build these experiences.”
She said that she loves working with the girls who she describes as “amazing, bright, fun, determined, and curious.” Their curiosity and excitement for the world around them has brightened her time here in Rota.
Zabel, a self-proclaimed nomad, received a degree in theater from the College of Charleston in South Carolina. After graduation, she moved to San Diego where she met her husband and since then, they “have been bouncing around the world enjoying all the different places and experiences” the Navy has taken them.
For her, finding meaningful ways to give back to the community is important. Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, she would volunteer at the installation post office and during the pandemic she transitioned to making over 7,000 masks during the three years.
“I am so happy they aren’t necessary in daily life anymore,” she said, “but now I have idea what to do with all this fabric!”
In her free time, Zabel enjoys reading, knitting, traveling Europe, cooking, and sampling good food and wine.
As she prepares to leave Rota, Zabel reflects on what she loves about the Spanish culture.
“Everything. Being able to live here is a dream come true. I love being able to walk down these ancient streets, pop in for a bite to eat or a glass of wine. I love the relaxed pace of Spain and the no pasa nada attitude.”
