FORT BRAGG, N. C. -- After hosting virtual maternity fairs and a goodie bag drive through, Womack Army Medical Center is planning a free face-to-face maternity fair, Sept. 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with registration beginning at the All American entrance and extending to the Reilly Road entrance.

Those expecting or planning on having a baby or currently parents can expect to learn and receive valuable information about infant care from various services and the child passenger safety check station, provided by Fort Bragg Fire and Emergency Services.

This event will have scheduled classes in the Weaver auditorium for birth plans at 10 a.m., comfort techniques at 10:30 a.m.; baby blues and beyond at 12:30 p.m.; safe sleep at 11:30 a.m.; infant massage at 1:30 p.m. and other services provided by nutrition care, obstetrics and gynecology, patient administration and Women Infant and Children (WIC), among others.

The child passenger safety check station will be stationed outside of the All American entrance. Parents and caregivers will receive one-on-one instruction with a certified child passenger safety (CPS) technician on the proper installation of car seats. To facilitate this, they encourage parents and caregivers to bring their vehicle, car seat and if possible, their child who will be in that seat.

“We strive to make sure that parents and caregivers feel confident and competent to properly install their child seat and secure their child,” said Robert Brogdon, firefighter, Fort Bragg Fire and Emergency Services.

This is a good time for the CPS technician to check for recalls and provide information regarding new car seat registration. They will also be providing safety recommendations for child passengers and answer any questions that attendees may have.

“Working with a CPS technician, parents will go through the steps of properly installing the child seat or base,” said Brogdon. “They will also discuss proper harnessing of the child and practice this important step.”

There will also be other new services like Financial Readiness, Family Advocacy, and the Army Substance Abuse Program, who will be providing information on fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. (FASD).

According to Katrina Kilmartin-Baucom, Army Substance Abuse program, prevention coordinator, “during the presentation, parents can expect to learn common misunderstandings and myths regarding alcohol use during pregnancy, facts related to alcohol use during pregnancy, potential outcomes especially related to FASD prevention, and resources for diagnosis and treatment.”

This maternity fair takes place bi-annually. The next fair is scheduled for April 2023.
Classes will also be available for live viewing on the WAMC Facebook page like dad101, for those unable to attend in person. For more information, please follow WAMC on Facebook Twitter, Instagram and YouTube using the handle @WomackAMC.
