FORT MCCOY, Wis. -- U.S. Army Reserve Spc. Jaime Casiano, a veterinary food inspector assigned to the 422nd Medical Detachment, Veterinary Services based in Rockville, Maryland, is responsible for inspecting food shipments for quality and safety upon delivery.

Spc. Casiano and his team participated in Exercise Global Medic, an annual joint training exercise that provides opportunities for medical personnel to practice critical life-saving techniques in a controlled environment. The team performs timely, thorough inspections for signs of foodborne pathogens, and reports on insufficient temperatures, conspicuous colors, texture or smells, or a breach in canned goods.

Nearly 3,000 military personnel are involved with annual training exercises at Fort McCoy and rely on Soldiers like Casiano to ensure that all food products are safe for consumption.

Casiano shared his sense of fulfillment in the important role of food inspection services.

“I take a lot of pride in that. We might not be the guys you see jumping out of helicopters and stuff like that, but our job is to make sure that those guys can do their job and keep our country safe.
The Medical Readiness Training Command conducts Exercise Global Medic as part of the Army Reserve Medical Command's larger mission to provide trained, equipped and combat ready units and medical personnel to support the total force on the battlefields of today and tomorrow.
