FARNBOROUGH, U.K. - For the first time since 2018, the U.S. military is participating in the Farnborough International Airshow in Farnborough, United Kingdom, from July 18-22, 2022.
The airshow serves as a global platform for the aerospace and defense industry. Typically, the show has approximately 200,000 visitors and exhibitors from more than 35 countries. U.S. support in the British-sponsored event demonstrates our strong European presence and strengthens our ties with NATO Allies and Partners.
Numerous models of U.S. military aircraft are scheduled to support static aircraft displays, including the AH-64D Apache Longbow, CH-47F Chinook helicopters, F-35A Lightning II, F-16 Fighting Falcon, F-15E Strike Eagle, C-130H Hercules, and the P-8A Poseidon.
"I'm here as the air boss for the DoD contingent who's representing all the armed forces in the United Kingdom for this trade show, the Farnborough trade show," said U.S Air Force Lt. Col. Philippe Melby, air boss for DoD participation at Farnborough.
The air boss serves as the officer who facilitates all aspects of an operation involving aircraft. At the Farnborough International Airshow, there is a section dedicated to the DoD equipment organized and facilitated by the air boss and deputy air boss.
"The DoD is able to showcase our capabilities, we showcase our partnerships and our strong relationships,” said Melby.
The last time this event occurred was in 2018.
"We haven't been able to do this show for four years because COVID impacted all shows; they were shut down, so this is the big intro to the trade show world," said Melby.
U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Andre Walton, deputy air boss for the DoD participation at Farnborough, explains how events like the Farnborough International Airshow help with our relationships.
"It really helps strengthen our strategic partnerships across the world, things that we're doing every day, it's a team fight, and we need to have those partners all around the globe," said Walton.
Walton explained that it helps to have the aircraft and the men and women who can speak on their capabilities to the participants.
12th Combat Aviation Brigade is one of the units supporting U.S. European Command's theater strategy by demonstrating U.S. commitment to European Allies and Partners and highlighting U.S. capabilities to diverse audiences.
"It’s a great platform for us, as subject matter experts, to demonstrate the capabilities of the aircraft that is going in to support these alliances and what we are doing for them," said Chief Warrant Officer 2 Austin Reidy, CH-47 pilot, Bravo "Big Windy" Company, 1-214th General Support Battalion, 12 CAB.
12 CAB is among other units assigned to V Corps, America's Forward Deployed Corps in Europe. They work alongside NATO Allies and regional security partners to provide combat-ready forces, execute joint and multinational training exercises, and retain command and control for all rotational and assigned units in the European Theater.
