GRASS VALLEY, Calif. – U.S. Army 6th Brigade Northern California Recruiting Battalion Soldiers were in attendance of the inaugural Grass Valley (GV) Armed Forces Day on May 21 organized by Nevada County to show appreciation of service and sacrifice of U.S. Armed Forces personnel. The GV Armed Forces Day celebration included: opening ceremony colors, booths from all service branches, music performances, static and vehicle displays in additional to two aerial flyovers.

Staff Sgt. Daniel Cabrera, Auburn Station Commander, and Capital Recruiting Company organized the U.S. Army’s support to include: a booth featuring two Humvees, weightlifting and pull-up bar challenge, and giveaways for the Future Soldiers and their families.

The celebration was held in scenic downtown Grass Valley with a main stage and booths lining the streets of the downtown intermingled with local businesses.

Following the second aerial flyover of the Coast Guard Air Station Sacramento’s C-27J Spartan, medium-range surveillance plane. Seven Future U.S. Army Soldiers took an oath of enlistment at the main stage.

Next there were award presentations to Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard, National Guard, and Space Force. One Army Reserve recruiter, Sgt. William Oliver, assigned to Northern California’s Recruiting Battalion, Florin Station, won the GV Military Ambassador award. Oliver received a key to the city, presented to him by Ben Aguilar, mayor of Grass Valley, and a GV Armed Forces Day coin. Oliver volunteers his free time to community service to include more than 50 hours at Habitat for Humanity and assisting in the collection hundreds of dollars of food and clothing that were donated to the Salvation Army for families in need.

"I like helping people," said Oliver. "That's why I chose to be a Human Resource Specialist. That's also why I chose to serve."

Oliver further elaborated he likes working with people so working with the Salvation Army and collecting toys and clothes for the less fortunate was something that came as second nature to him.

To end the day, Steve Rose, Director of Human Resources for County of Nevada, gave closing remarks and U.S. Air Force Band of the Golden West played as the sun set for the day.
