Northeast Syria – Soldiers with a Combined Special Operations Joint Task Force – Levant’s Civil Affairs Team visited an internally displaced persons (IDP) camp near Areesha in the Hasakah region of Syria, June 9, 2022.

During the team’s visit to the camp, they met with camp administrators to gain insight into the overall conditions, discuss the problems facing the inhabitants and determine actionable solutions. Like many IDP camps in the region, it suffers from a lack of adequate potable water, electricity and fuel energy to sustain current population. Following the key leader engagement, the team surveyed the camp to observe the inhabitants and assess the camp conditions while many of the camp’s youth took to the streets with smiles and waves, curious and excited about the team’s presence.

“I feel fortunate for the opportunity to visit with the people in this camp,” said a CAT team member. “Hopefully our work here today will help produce real and positive change.” Visits to IDP camps like these are a key part of the CAT’s mission to establish relationships with local leaders in order to find ways to relieve humanitarian crisis and provide critical aid. After the team leaves the camp, their work is not over. “We are one of the only units with the access and means to provide on-the-ground reports about IDP camps in northeast Syria,” said the CAT Team Leader. “So, our work provides valuable knowledge and understanding to our higher commands and policymakers on the current situation.”

The CAT Team Leader added that the reports his team provide lead to greater assessments of conditions, which in turn direct leader’s efforts and resources appropriately in order to better advise, assist and enable partner forces in the region.
“Ultimately, we are all here to support our partners as they take the responsibility for the safety and security of the camp, its staff and inhabitants, and the people in the region,” said the CAT team leader.
