He brings history to life, as the walls and display cases are filled with rich artifacts that he has collected. His name is Michael Clauss, the Command Historian for the U.S. Army Central Headquarters.
USARCENT has collected about 200 artifacts, with the help of Mr. Clauss, and from this collection, there are a few that speak volumes on Army Heritage. This specific historic artifact is the USARCENT After Action Report, Third US Army, which was a monthly accounting of all army operations in theater, including maps and supporting documents. Additionally, the book was once secret but later changed to unclassified.
This book was printed in 1945 by U.S. Army Engineers assigned to Third Army. This book is extremely unique as it is full of original photos, graphics and artwork all created by Third Army. The book is still in good condition, about three times the size of our history textbooks, weighing around 20 lbs, with almost 700 pages, and holds that old book smell everyone loves.
“The book is a collection of everything Third Army accomplished in 284 days in combat during the war in Europe. The book is divided into two volumes. Volume one is by day chronological narrative of what activities and actions in Third Army. Volume two contains staff section reports. As an example, every daily operations report is recorded in the operations section of volume two,” said Clauss.
There are 182 originally printed copies of this book, it is unknown how many rare copies still exist as most are in the hands of private collectors. But, for those interested in viewing this book digitally, it is available at Ike Skeleton Combined Arms Research Library at Fort Leavenworth.
Clauss is excited to share history with everyone, “My main mission is to capture and archive what we are doing today. I love sharing the history and stories of the Soldiers of our U.S. Army history,” said Clauss. “I love to share our Army story, whether it be individual accomplishments, large unit actions, or liberating millions of miles of territory, it's part of our Army heritage, it is part of our Army story.”
