RAIN WON’T STOP US! SCHWAB FESTIVAL PERSONIFIES EACH PARTICIPANT’S THOUGHT / 雨にも負けず！ 参加者一人ひとりの想いを形にしたシュワブ・フェスティバル

The U.S. Marine Corps open-gate festivals in Okinawa are something many Japanese, not only from the local communities, but also mainland Japan, have looked forward to having again ever since the outbreak of the pandemic more than two years ago. One lucky base to have hosted such festivals twice in six months is Camp Schwab. This northerly camp in Okinawa held the open-base festival March 26 and 27. The previous one occurred in November last year.

Okinawa has been experiencing rain throughout March, and March 26 was no exception. However, on the first day of the festival, more than 2,000 people, including nearly 1,000 Japanese, participated in the event.

“This is the greatest celebration and marriage of Okinawan people and Marines,” Col. Matthew W. Tracy, camp commander for Camp Schwab and commanding officer of 4th Marine Regiment. “Up in the Northern camp, everyone is so friendly and they cooperate well. They are wonderful neighbors. It’s the real sense of community here.”

Before COVID-19, each Marine base held an annual festival which featured live performers, demonstrations, food vendors, and games. The camps opened their gates not only to service members and their families, but also U.S. and Japanese citizens. However, the past two years, festivals had been either canceled or opened only for people who fall under the Status of Forces Agreement.

This year, participants enjoyed free live music and entertainment, carnival rides and static displays of military equipment, including tactical vehicles and an MV-22 Osprey on Saturday and a Car and Motorcycle Show on Sunday.

“I am here to watch my child perform,” said Yumi Shiokawa from Uruma city, whose 14-year-old daughter had just finished a dance performance on the stage. “It was good to see my daughter giving her all and looking happy while she was dancing. It is completely different from performing online without the audience.”

Kozue Nakamura, the director of Dance Studio MILK, expressed her appreciation for the offer to perform at the festival. She was pleased to see the children dance at ease even though they had to go out to the stage and perform without much practice beforehand due to the rain.

“There was a sense of togetherness and an atmosphere that everyone could enjoy,” voiced Nakamura. “The children danced with the full spirit of entertaining the audience, and the positive reactions they received from the audience will give them strength and inspiration for the future so they can continue to do their best.”

Another fun part of the festival is all the food: juicy smoked pork shoulder, BBQ, authentic street tacos, Miami style food, and the usual burgers and burritos. Local vendors, too, served food, drinks and games.

“I wanted to come to Okinawa and attend a festival, so I searched the internet before I made a trip plan,” said Riki Matsuura, a college student from Kyoto with a friend from Hyogo prefecture. “When I typed ‘matsuri’ the English word ‘festival’ came up first, and it was about this Schwab festival.”

There were also T-shirt giveaways. When Tracy led the event, all the service members were excited and cheered. He tossed a couple of T-shirts to the crowd.

The second day was blessed by the weather and the turnout was almost 3,000 total. This two-day festivity ended in success and satisfied more than 5,000 people, including about 2,500 local and Japanese visitors.

　在沖海兵隊が主催するオープンゲート・フェスティバルは、地元だけでなく県外の人々の楽しみでもある。２年前の新型コロナウイルス感染症発生以来中止されてきたが、半年間に２回も開催された幸運な基地がキャンプ・シュワブである。本島北部に位置するこの基地では、３月
26日と27日にフェスティバルのためにゲートが開放された。前回は昨年11月に行われた。

　３月の沖縄はずっと雨模様が続き、26日も例外ではなかった。しかし、フェスティバル初日には千人近い日本人を含む二千人以上が参加し、祭りを盛り上げた。

　キャンプ・シュワブの基地司令官で第４海兵連隊長のマシュー・Ｗ・トレーシー大佐は、「これは沖縄の人々と海兵隊の最大の祝賀であり結びつきを象徴するものです。北部キャンプでは、皆がとても友好的で、協力し合っています。素晴らしい隣人です。まさに共同体という感じです」と述べた。

　コロナ以前は、各海兵隊基地が毎年フェスティバルを開催し、ライブ演奏やデモンストレーション、屋台、ゲームなど、軍人とその家族だけでなく、米国や日本の住民にも一般開放していた。しかし、過去２年間は、フェスティバルは中止か、米軍人や軍属にだけに開放していた。

　今年は、参加者は無料のライブ音楽とエンターテインメント、カーニバルの乗り物を楽しみ、土曜日にはＭＶ-22オスプレイ、日曜日には車とオートバイのショーを含む軍用車両の展示を楽しんだ。

　うるま市から来た塩川由美さんは、14歳の娘がステージでダンスを披露した後、「子供のパフォーマンスを見るために来ました。娘が全力で、楽しそうに踊っている姿を見ることができてよかったです。観客のいないオンライン公演とはまったく違いますね」と嬉しそうに話した。

　ダンススタジオミルクの仲村こづえ校長は、フェスティバルへの出演オファーに感謝し、子どもたちが雨で練習があまりできずステージに上がったにもかかわらず、のびのびと踊っている姿を見て、とてもうれしかったという。

　「一体感があって、みんなが楽しめる雰囲気だった」と仲村さんは声を弾ませた。「子どもたちは、お客さんを楽しませようという気持ちを全面に出して踊り、お客さんからもらった反響を力に変えて、これからも頑張っていけるだろうと思いました。」

　フェスティバルのもう一つの楽しみは、おいしい食事をする時だ。ジューシーな豚肩ロースのスモーク、バーベキュー、本格的なストリートタコス、マイアミスタイルの料理、そしてお馴染みのハンバーガーやブリトーだ。地域の出店も、各々の食べ物や飲み物、ゲームなどを提供した。

　京都から兵庫県の友人と一緒に来た大学生の松浦莉紀さんは、「沖縄に来て、お祭りに参加したいと思い、旅行計画を立てる前にインターネットで検索しました。『matsuri』と入力したら 『festival 』という英語が最初に出てきて、このシュワブ・フェスティバルのことが書いてあったんです」と笑った。

　Ｔシャツの景品もあり、トレーシー大佐がステージに登場すると、会場にいた隊員らは皆、歓声を上げた。景品のＴシャツを大佐は何枚か客席に向けて投げ入れた。

　２日目は天候に恵まれ、総勢三千人近い人出となった。地元と県外からの観光客約二千五百人を含む五千人以上が楽しみ、この２日間のフェスティバルは成功裏に終了した。
