Marines attend survival Japanese writing course / 海兵隊員、「生き残り」をかけて、日本語文字を学ぶ

Marine Corps Community Services is a government entity working under the Marine Corps. Its ultimate objective is to improve the morale and welfare of all service members and their families, that includes all of the Status of Forces agreement personnel.

MCCS Okinawa provides a wide variety of services, programs, special events and facilities to support the entire U.S. military community in Okinawa with a population of over 50,000. There are more than 80 programs and services available.

And some MCCS programs, like the Marines and Family Programs-Resources, offer classes. On Aug. 31, 2021, a Survival Japanese Writing Class was given to single and unaccompanied Marines and sailors. This one-and-a-half hour class was offered during lunchtime for those active service members in order to get more participants.

“The basic fundamentals for Survival Japanese Language and Writing consist of what patrons would need to survive if they were ever lost in Okinawa,” explained Tasha N. Smalls, family programs and resources manager. “For instance, like basic survival in the jungle; If you know how to make a fire, it drastically increases your likelihood to make it on your own. Our premise is, what we can teach is that if personnel ventured into Okinawa and were lost, what would they need to know to make it back to the installation.”

According to Megumi Tamaki, the instructor and family programs and resources inter-cultural coordinator, the class was a new approach. MCCS Okinawa has offered similar classes to Marines and their family members through Marine and Family Programs-Resources but this is the first time they paired up with the Single Marine Program which focuses only on the single Marines or those who are here without their family.

Tamaki taught Hiragana, Katakana and Romaji. Hiragana and Katakana are phonetic symbols, each representing one syllable. Romaji represents Japanese sounds using the Roman alphabet. To have attendees understand better, the History of Japanese writing was introduced. The students practiced writing their own name in Katakana.

“I learn better in writing. If I know the writing, I can say it, so I would know what it means,” said Cpl. Nurid Lewis, a motor transport operator with Marine Air Control Group 18, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing. By learning letters, he can familiarize himself with the language and easily understand the sound of it.

Two attendees were both first timers in any Japanese classes. They preferred knowing the writing before speaking. “Everyone has their own strength,” Tamaki nodded.

“Many people think that Japanese writing is difficult as we use three different writing systems,” Tamaki continued. “But if you recognize some Japanese characters when you go out in town, you will get motivated to learn more. At least if you know how to spell your name in Japanese, it will be really useful.”

　ＭＣＣＳ（海兵隊コミュニティサービス）は、海兵隊下の政府事業体で、その究極の目的は、すべての軍人とその家族、そしてここ沖縄では、すべての地位協定締結者の士気と福祉を向上させることである。

　ＭＣＣＳ沖縄は、人口５万人以上の沖縄の米軍社会全体をサポートするために、様々なサービス、プログラム、特別イベント、施設を提供している。提案されるプログラムやサービスは80以上に及ぶ。

　その一つが「海兵隊・家族支援プログラム」だ。８月31日には、沖縄に単身駐留中の海兵隊員や水兵らを対象に「サバイバル日本語ライティングクラス」を実施した。この１時間半のクラスは、より多くの現役の海兵隊員が参加できるようにと、昼休みに行われた。

　家族プログラム・リソース・マネージャーのターシャ・Ｎ・スモールズさんは、「サバイバル・ジャパニーズ・ランゲージ・アンド・ライティングの基本は、受講者が沖縄の町に出て迷子になったときに生き延びるために必要なものです」と説明。「例えば、ジャングルでの基本的なサバイバルと同じで、火の起こし方を知っていれば、一人で火を起こせる可能性が飛躍的に高まります。私たちができることは、もし隊員が沖縄で道に迷った時、基地に戻るために何を知っておく必要があるかということを教えることです」と述べた。

　講師であり、家族プログラム・リソースの異文化コーディネーターでもある玉城めぐみさんによると、このクラスは新しい試みだという。ＭＣＣＳ沖縄では、海兵隊員とその家族を対象とした「海兵隊・家族支援プログラム」で同様のクラスを提供しているが、独身の海兵隊員や単身赴任の隊員のみを対象とした「独身者プログラム」との連携は今回が初めてであった。

　玉城さんは、ひらがな、カタカナ、ローマ字を教えた。ひらがなとカタカナは、それぞれが１つの音節を表す表音文字である。ローマ字は、日本語の音をアルファベットで表したものだ。また、受講者がさらに理解を深めるために、日本の文字の歴史についても紹介。生徒たちは自分の名前をカタカナで書く練習をした。

　「私は文章で学ぶのが好きです。文字を知っていれば、それを口に出して言うことができるので、意味がわかりやすくなります」と語るのは、第１海兵隊航空団、第18海兵航空管制群の輸送車両運転手、ヌリド・ルイス伍長。文字を覚えることで、その言語に慣れ親しむことができ、音も簡単に理解できるようになるという。

　２人の受講生は、いずれも日本語の授業を受けるのが初めてだった。彼らは話す前に文字を知ることを好んだ。「人によって得手不得手がありますからね」と玉城さんはうなずく。

　「日本では３種類の文字を使っているので、日本語を書くのは難しいと思われています。でも、街に出たときに日本語の文字がわかると、もっと勉強しようという気になりますよね。せめて、自分の名前が書けるようになれば、とても便利ですよ」と玉城さんは話した。
