The Florida Army National Guard hosted this year’s Region III Best Warrior Competition on May 9 - 13th, 2022, at Camp Blanding Joint Military Training Center, Starke, Florida. The Best Warrior Competition is a five day test consisting of several different Army Warrior Tasks meant to test each competitor both physically and mentally. The purpose of the Best Warrior Competition is to highlight Soldiers’ knowledge, esprit de corps, and reinforce leadership, readiness and resilience.

“The Best Warrior Competition is a symbol of the excellence of the performance that our soldiers do every single day.'' said Ret. Sgt. Maj. of the Army Daniel A. Dailey. “This is where our soldiers come together and exercise their skills and their craft and they show how good they are.” Dailey was a surprise guest who offered advice and motivation to the soldiers competing in the Region III Best Warrior Competition.

Spc. Grayson Vaughn, a military police officer with the 252nd Military Police Company in the Tennessee Army National Guard, won the Soldier of the Year award. “This is one of the best decisions I've made in my military career, this has been a personal experience for me, I had the opportunity to better myself as a Soldier, better myself physically, mentally and spiritually” said Spc. Grayson Vaughn.

Vaughn’s advice to future competitors is to, “step forward and make that first step to volunteer to compete, give it a shot and try. That in itself sets you apart from other soldiers around you.”

Sgt. Zachary Kleinfelder, an infantryman with Detachment 1 of the Headquarters, Headquarters Troop, 2nd Squadron of the 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment, also with the Tennessee Army National Guard, won the Non-commissioned Officer of the Year Award. “It's an honor to compete alongside these other NCOs,” said Kleinfelder.

“The Best Warrior Competition validates the hard work and training that we’ve been putting in for the last year ” said Sgt. Kleinfelder. “Take it one day at a time, start with the physical then work on the mental, work on your Army Warrior Tasks, work one day at a time and you’ll get there.” The Best Warrior Competition recognizes Soldiers who demonstrate commitment to the Army Values and embody the Warrior Ethos.

The winners of the Region III Best Warrior Competition will move forward to compete in this year’s National Army National Guard Best Warrior Competition in Tennessee planned for later this year.
