PHOENIX — Barry Goldwater High School senior, Breé Garcia, was awarded the Marine Option Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps Scholarship on May 9.

The NROTC Scholarship, valued at over $180,000, is a highly competitive program. Applicants must meet the rigorous academic and physical standards while demonstrating high leadership potential. Just 18% of applicants from the state of Arizona will enroll in the program next year.

"This program provides young men and women with an opportunity to serve their country in one of the most humbling and rewarding capacities among a group of just 21,000 Marine Corps Officers,” said Capt. Matthew Weber, the scholarship program coordinator for the state of Arizona. “We are excited to send Ms. Garcia to Arizona State University to begin her training and education in the journey toward earning a commission as a Marine Officer. We also recognize and thank those that supported Ms. Garcia through her journey to this point - friends, family, educators, and mentors - those selected to this program must be physically fit, mentally tough, and leaders among their peers, none of which is attainable without a strong support network."

Garcia was one of five applicants in the State of Arizona who were awarded the scholarship this year.  She is one the captains on the school’s wrestling team and is a three-time state champion.

“I remember I saw a 60-minute episode and it was the first time I had seen females in uniform, and I was so inspired,” she said.  “For a long time, I wanted to be a Navy officer, but more recently, I looked into the Marine Corps option and I absolutely fell in love with it. Talking to people, hearing their experiences, I realized the Marines were a much better fit for me, physically and mentally.”

Garcia credits wrestling and jujitsu which shaped her into the person she is today and said it's something that she holds near and dear to her heart.

“I am used to that feeling of being comfortable with being uncomfortable,” she said.  “That is where I feel I grow the most and make the biggest achievements.  I really believe that actions speak louder than words.  Being a captain taught me a lot about myself, like leadership skills, what kind of leader I am and just how to work as a team.  It’s huge reason as to why I want to be a Marine Officer.”

Now a high school graduate, Garcia will join Arizona State University’s NROTC Program where she will continue her education and learn how to lead Marines.
