    1st Marine Aircraft Wing

OKINAWA, Japan. – U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Gen. Brian W. Cavanaugh, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing (1st MAW) Commanding General, presented the Legion of Merit to U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Maj. Stephen A. Griffin, May 9, 2022, for his superior leadership and steadfast dedication to the Marines and mission of 1st MAW.
The Legion of Merit is awarded to individuals who distinguish themselves by exceptionally meritorious service in a duty of great responsibility. The performance must have contributed materially to the success of a major command or project and far exceed what is expected by normal standards.
Griffin received this award as he prepares to transfer the responsibility as Sergeant Major for 1st MAW to Sgt. Maj. Arthur M. Arebalo Jr. Since 2019, Griffin acted as senior advisor to the commanding general, and provided guidance and expertise to more than 8,000 Marines, Sailors, civilians and their families across 27 subordinate commands.
“Sergeant Major Griffin is a superb example of a Marine where there is no gap between the things he says and the things he does,” said Maj. Gen. Brian Cavanaugh, Commanding General of 1st MAW. “It’s bittersweet for him to be moving on, but I’m excited for him to have the opportunity to represent Marines and Sailors at a higher level in the institution.”
Griffin enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1993, serving as a Light Armored Vehicle Crewman with 2nd Light Armored Infantry Battalion in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Other notable service includes deployments to the Mediterranean and Iraq and tours in Argentina, China, Yemen and Switzerland. Prior to his arrival to 1st MAW, he served as the Sergeant Major for the Marine Air Group 29 (MAG-29) at Marine Corps Air Station New River, North Carolina.
“I look back on my time serving with 1st MAW Marines and Sailors with pride knowing that they are committed to excellence and marking the sacrifices that are necessary to remain ready to Fight Tonight,” said Griffin.
Following Griffin’s departure, Arebalo will carry out the critical tasks and responsibilities required of 1st MAW’s Sergeant Major. Griffin’s next assignment is the Sergeant Major of Training and Education Command (TECOM) at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia.
Farewell and following seas to Sgt. Maj. Griffin, and welcome to 1st MAW, Sgt. Maj Arebalo.
