The 174th Attack Wing (ATKW) conducted a three-day training exercise at Hancock Field Air National Guard Base from April 29, 2022 through May 1, 2022.

During the exercise, guard members acted as if they were preparing to be deployed to another country.

The members started the exercise by processing through a pre-deployment line in groups, which consisted of dropping off baggage to load, important briefings, filling out paperwork, and turning in paperwork to make sure each member is mission ready if needed.

Once the processing was done, members were then bussed to a holding center, before simulating the boarding of a C-130 aircraft.

A small group of members got to ride in an actual C-130 during the exercise, as the ride was intended to simulate a flight to another country.
“Having an actual C-130 come down was in part to add some realism to the exercise,” said William J. McCrink III, Commander of the 174th Attack Wing. “It was also to exercise muscle movement. We talk about generating cargo and building pallets, but if we don’t have an aircraft to put it on, it seems like it’s not real.”

The exercise concluded once each group was processed through the pre-deployment line and boarded the C-130 for a simulated flight.

Following the three day exercise, the 174th ATKW had an annual training week.

The training week focused on the Attack Wing members individual training requirements.

“At the leadership development summit last year, we said that all the units on base would come up with their own annual training plan,” said McCrink. “That would allow them to plan out their entire year to meet all of their readiness training.”

The training week also allowed the 174th ATKW’s members a chance to practice donning and doffing their Mission Oriented Protective Posture (MOPP) gear.

Throughout the week, alarms were sounded on the base intercom system notifying members of different threat levels or attacks.

Those threat level attacks were simulated chemical, biological, and weapon threats coming in from an enemy force. All members participating in the exercise had to wear MOPP gear in accordance with each threat level, which is worn for protection against chemical and biological agents.

The exercise also helped train airmen on how to search for unexploded ordinance (UXO), and how to detect chemical agents while doing sweeps as a part of a Post Attack Reconnaissance (PAR) team.

This exercise is one step in the process to make sure every member will be ready at a moments notice to deploy anywhere if needed.
