LACEY, Wash. (May 3, 2022) — Eighteen high school military recruits from the capital region received their oath of enlistment from Lt. Gen. Xavier Brunson, commander of America’s First Corps, with family and friends in attendance during the 2022 Operation Recruit Enlistment Dinner at St. Martin University.

“You are choosing to do something that not everybody will do,” said Brunson. “To know there are young men and women willing to serve their nation makes not only myself and your families proud, but your country as well.”

The Operation Recruit Enlistment Dinner program was created over 10 years ago to honor high school students who have chosen to join the U.S. armed forces.

“It has always been my dream to serve in the U.S. Army,” said Dylan Christin, a recruit planning to become a petroleum supply specialist. “The benefits are incredible, and it will be a privilege to soon wear the uniform.”

Director of Washington Department of Veterans Affairs and U.S. Army veteran, Alfie Alvarado, offered words of encouragement to the new recruits during the ceremony.

“Choose excitement over fear,” said Alvarado. “Bring excitement into your work and that will set a positive example for those with whom you serve.”

The 18 recruits will be joining one of the branches of the U.S. Armed Forces upon completion of their high school education.

“Joining the Air Force has always been my goal,” said Andrew Harrison, a recruit planning to work in tactical aircraft maintenance. “I’m looking forward to the travel opportunities and seeing if this becomes a lifelong career.”

After receiving the Oath of Enlistment, the recruits competed in a friendly pushup competition for camaraderie. Friends and family offered motivation and support, with two winners taking home military-affiliated gear.

Additional distinguished speakers included retired Maj. Gen. James Collins, Dave Olwell, dean of Saint Martin’s University, Andy Ryder, mayor of Lacey, and John Braun, Washington State senator.
