CAMP LEMONNIER, Djibouti (April 15, 2022) - U.S. service members, civilians and invited guests attended an iftar meal sponsored by several Non-Federal Entities including the Wardroom, Chief Petty Officers Association and the Friends of Africa Volunteers on Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti (CLDJ), Thursday, April 14, 2022.

Iftar is the meal Muslims celebrating Ramadan take to break their daily fast at sunset during the month of Ramadan. For 2022, Ramadan is observed in Djibouti from April 2 to May 2.

“Ramadan is an exhilarating experience,” says U.S. Navy Personnel Specialist 1st Class Jesus Salazar, a Navy Reserve Sailor from Miami currently deployed to CLDJ, and the master of ceremonies for the event. “I tried my best, in solidarity with the Muslim community, to properly immerse myself in the experience and purpose of Ramadan and to gain an appreciation of the challenges and rewards Muslims experience during this important month.”

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. It is observed by Muslims as a time for fasting, prayer and service. The majority of adult Muslims are expected to fast between sunrise and sunset. There are considerations and special circumstances where fasting cannot be observed, like during a pregnancy or working through medical issues. All Muslims engage more in charitable acts during Ramadan.

For those who can participate in fasting, they eat a meal in the predawn hours known as suhur, and break their fast at sunset with their iftar meal. The iftar is commonly shared with the community or large groups of friends and family.

Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti serves as the primary expeditionary base for U.S. military forces providing support to ships, aircraft, and personnel that ensure security and stability throughout the Horn of Africa. The Department of Defense supports our African partners with capacity building, strengthening defense institutions, and supporting a whole-of government approach in the region so diplomatic and developmental solutions can take root.
