The Colorado National Guard’s HIMARS unit is leaving its mark on Al Dhafra Air Base.
The B Battery of 3-157 Field Artillery Regiment High Mobility Artillery Rocket System is honored on a bunker wall near the Airman’s Attic on the base. The wall was painted by Sgt. Anthony Castillo, a mobility specialist with the unit.
“You have left your mark through your performance on this deployment,” said Capt. Matthew Yersak, battery commander. “This painting only solidifies that legacy.”
Castillo spent about 25 hours in total on the painting, which features a mythical banshee, which is part of the unit logo for the battery. He worked on the painting after dark. During the day, the intense sunlight and heat dried out his paints too quickly to allow him to work on the image.
“I’ve always enjoyed painting and this gave me a good way to pass the time, doing something constructive,” Castillo said.
Castillo said he has painted on other concrete barriers at other bases, but the HIMARS wall was his first at ADAB. He said a couple of other units have contacted him about painting a wall for them.
Castillo is a truck driver in his civilian job. In his spare time, in addition to painting, he’s working on writing and drawing children’s books.
The Community Activities Center at ADAB is the authority that grants permission for painting bunker walls at the base.
